Patent number: 6900262Abstract: The present invention generally provides a method for producing an exfoliated nanocomposite. The method involves charging to water, as the continuous phase, monomers, polymerizable surfactant, and water-soluble initiator. The monomers are allowed to polymerize under agitation to form an emulsion of polymers, and the polymerizable surfactant is bound to the polymers so formed, with an ionic end of the polymerizable surfactant extending from the polymers to provide surface charges. Thereafter, a suspension of nanofillers in water is charged to the emulsion. The nanofillers are oppositely charged from the ionic end of the polymerizable surfactant such that they electrostatically bind to the polymers within the emulsion. The water is subsequently decanted to produce a nanocomposite with an exfoliated structure.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 2001Date of Patent: May 31, 2005Assignee: The University of AkronInventors: William J. Patent number: 4812510Abstract: Colloid-free vinyl acetate latexes having an average particle size between 400 .ANG. to 700 .ANG. at a concentration of 30 to 50% by weight have been prepared. The latexes comprise 60 to 100 weight parts of vinyl acetate monomer with about 40 to 0 weight parts of one or more ethylenically unsaturated comonomers such that the glass transition temperature of the polymers are between -10.degree. and 40.degree. C. The latexes are prepared by emulsion polymerization in aqueous medium, in the presence of 0.05 to 20 parts of an anionic surfactant, e.g., alpha-olefin surfactant, and 0.05 to 15 parts of an ionic comonomer, e.g., sodium 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonate (Na-AMPS). The interior wall primer-sealer derived from these fine particle size vinyl acetate latexes showed excellent enamel hold-out properties and paint stability. The latexes may also be applied aas binders in the manufacture of other paints, adhesives, papers, and as textile sizes.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1986Date of Patent: March 14, 1989Assignee: The Glidden CompanyInventors: Gerald W. Patent number: 4612343Abstract: A colored polymer emulsion having dispersed therein particles of a copolymer having at least 2.times.10.sup.-5 g-eq./g of the copolymer, of a phosphoric acid group or salt thereof. The copolymer particles have an average particle size of not larger than 1 .mu.m and a minimum film-forming temperature of not higher than 35.degree. C., and have been dyed with a basic dye. The emulsion is capable of forming a film having an improved water resistance and light resistance. The emulsion is prepared by polymerizing a monomer mixture comprising (a - 1) a monomer having a phosphoric acid group or a salt thereof, (a - 2) a hydrophobic monomer and (b) a optional hydrophilic monomer by an emulsion polymerization procedure, and then incorporating a basic dye to the obtained polymer emulsion, or by carrying out the emulsion polymerization in the presence of a basic dye.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 1985Date of Patent: September 16, 1986Assignee: Toya Soda Manufacturing Co., Ltd.Inventors: Shuichi Okuzono, Yasuhiro Oda, Takashi Shintani, Noriaki Emura

Patent number: 4584341Abstract: This invention is a method of producing a latex of crosslinked polydiorganosiloxane. The latex yields an elastomer upon removal of the water. The latex is prepared by homogenizing a mixture of hydroxyl endblocked polydiorganosiloxane, less than 75 millimoles of surface active anionic catalyst per kilogram of polydiorganosiloxane where said surface active anionic catalyst is dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid or hydrogen lauryl sulfate, and water to yield an oil-in-water emulsion. This emulsion is then admixed with from 0.5 to 15 parts by weight of an alkoxy silicon compound selected from a silane of the formula R.sub.a 'Si(OR.sup.3).sub.4-a where R' is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical of up to 12 carbon atoms, R.sup.3 is an alkyl radical of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and a is 0 or 1, a partial hydrolyzate of the silane, or mixtures of silane and partial hydrolyzate. The resulting emulsion is maintained at a temperature of about 15.degree. to 30.degree.
