  • Patent number: 5214096
Abstract: Water soluble polymerizable acrylic prepolymers can be formed from ethylenically unsaturated monomers that include monomers that provide a pendant group that is a blocked, saturated, ethylenic group, followed by unblocking the pendant saturated ethylenic group to leave a pendant ethylenically unsaturated group. These prepolymers can be copolymerized through these unsaturated groups, for instance after impregnation into a permeable substrate as in chemical grouting or shut off processes, to form cross linked solid polymers. The polymerizable monomers that are ethylenically unsaturated but which also include the blocked ethylenic group are also novel.

  • Patent number: 5166259
Abstract: An aqueous latex contains a functionalized copolymer prepared by emulsion polymerization. The copolymer can be applied to textile nonwoven materials and to various cellulosic substrates, and when utilized as a binder imparts enhanced properties thereto such as wet tensile strength, low temperature cure rates, and the like. The monomers generally forming the copolymer include at least two functional type monomers, one of which contains an activatable ester group, and at least one latex forming monomer.

  • Patent number: 5110864
Abstract: Water-in-oil emulsions of cationic water-soluble copolymers which are prepared by incorporating only a portion of the cationic monomer in the aqueous phase prior to forming the water-in-oil emulsion in which polymerization will occur, forming the emulsion, adding the balance of the cationic monomer such that essentially no polymerization occurs immediately after the addition, and polymerizing the monomers. Copolymers prepared by this process show improved performance over conventionally prepared cationic copolymers.

  • Patent number: 4812510
Abstract: Colloid-free vinyl acetate latexes having an average particle size between 400 .ANG. to 700 .ANG. at a concentration of 30 to 50% by weight have been prepared. The latexes comprise 60 to 100 weight parts of vinyl acetate monomer with about 40 to 0 weight parts of one or more ethylenically unsaturated comonomers such that the glass transition temperature of the polymers are between -10.degree. and 40.degree. C. The latexes are prepared by emulsion polymerization in aqueous medium, in the presence of 0.05 to 20 parts of an anionic surfactant, e.g., alpha-olefin surfactant, and 0.05 to 15 parts of an ionic comonomer, e.g., sodium 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonate (Na-AMPS). The interior wall primer-sealer derived from these fine particle size vinyl acetate latexes showed excellent enamel hold-out properties and paint stability. The latexes may also be applied aas binders in the manufacture of other paints, adhesives, papers, and as textile sizes.
