  • Patent number: 4230813
Abstract: Dimensionally stable, pigmentable polyester molding compositions comprise:(A) a polymerizable polyester component; and(B) an additive component comprising discrete particles of less than about 50 microns diameter of a lightly cross-linked styrene terpolymer having a glass transition temperature of below about 100.degree. Celsius and which is chemically inert with respect to the polyester component and is swellable but insoluble therein. The additive component is the reaction product of styrene, an unsaturated monofunctional comonomer and a polyfunctional monomer such as divinyl benzene.

  • Patent number: 4218546
Abstract: A polyester resin composition comprising a thixotropic solution of an unsaturated polyester resin in a volatile monomer containing also a polymer which is partially incompatible with the polyester resin solution i.e. forms a hazy solution in it. The partially incompatible polymer can be a polymer of an ester of an unsaturated carboxylic acid.

  • Patent number: 4206291
Abstract: Polyvinyl halide or polyvinyl graft copolymers intimately mixed with a polyester derived mainly from an halogenated bicycloheptene carboxylic acid or anhydride such as chlorendic acid or anhydride and an alkylene glycol or alkylene oxide such as ethylene oxide are provided. The graft copolymers of the invention are obtained by polymerizing a vinyl halide in bulk in contact with an olefin polymer. The graft copolymer compositions of the invention have good clarity and provide improved processing characteristics and increased impact strength without reduction in heat distortion resulting from the addition of the polyester. The improved impact strength polyvinyl halide compositions of the invention can include blends of the polyester of the invention with modifying compounds, such as alkyl methacrylate-butadiene/styrene graft polymer impact modifiers and halogenated polyvinyl chloride. Blends of vinyl halide polymers with the polyesters of the invention provide compositions having improved processability.

  • Patent number: 4201826
Abstract: Polymerizable unsaturated polyester compositions are provided, particularly useful in the manufacture of multilayer laminates, consisting essentially of(1) a polyester of a polyhydric alcohol and a polycarboxylic acid, at least one of which is ethylenically unsaturated;(2) a monomer copolymerizable with the unsaturated polyester and having a boiling point below 150.degree. C.;(3) an additive forming a film on the polyester surface that inhibits volatilization of monomer from the polyester composition; and(4) a hydrophobic compound soluble at least in part both in the unsaturated polyester and in the film-forming additive that either(a) has an isoprene unit structure, or(b) is acyclic and has at least one ester and/or ether bond; and at least two terminal hydrocarbon groups, each with at least one ethylenically unsaturated group.

  • Patent number: 4184025
Abstract: A fast curing, high solids coating composition adapted for use as an automotive topcoat, which upon curing forms a hard, glossy, durable coating exhibiting excellent resistance to solvents and water. The coating composition contains greater than about 60 percent by weight of non-volatile solids and, exclusive of pigments, solvents and other nonreactive components, consists essentially of:(A) a copolymer bearing pendant epoxy functionality, having a number average molecular weight (M.sub.n) of between about 1500 and about 10,000 and a glass transition temperature (Tg) of between about -25.degree. and about 70.degree. C.;(B) a reactive catalyst comprising at least one hydroxy functional organophosphate ester selected from certain mono- and diesters of phosphoric acid;(C) an amine-aldehyde crosslinking agent; and(D) optionally, a hydroxy functional additive. The hydroxy functional organophosphate ester is included in the composition in an amount sufficient to provide between about 0.67 and about 1.
