Patent number: 4927885Abstract: Polypropylene resin compositions suitable for producing polypropylene films with excellent properties are disclosed. The compositions can provide polypropylene films having very excellent transparency, excellent heat-sealability and good anti-blocking property. Such characteristics are essential requirements for packing films. The polypropylene resin compositions comprise 70 to 99 parts by weight of polypropylene and 1 to 30 parts by weight of a specific hydrogenated petroleum resin. The hydrogenated petroleum resin can easily be prepared industrially from valueless by-products of oil and petrochemical industries, such as C.sub.5 fraction and C.sub.9 fraction by-produced in naphtha steam cracking process.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 1988Date of Patent: May 22, 1990Assignee: Maruzen Petrochemical Co., Ltd.Inventors: Suetou Hayashida, Kyoichiro Kimura, Eiji Takahashi

Patent number: 4921625Abstract: A process for incorporating carboxy and/or carboxyl derivative functionality into a hydrocarbon polymer which is substantially free of ethylenic unsaturation. The functionalization is accomplished by contacting the functionalizing agent or agents with the polymer in the presence of a free radical initiator in a blending apparatus capable of imparting high mechanical energy into the reaction medium. The blending apparatus is preferably an extruder and most preferably a non-intermeshing twin screw extruder. The amount of degradation resulting from the presence of a free radical initiator and the high mechanical shear at the elevated temperatures employed during the contacting is reduced by effecting the contacting in a suitable diluent. Similarly, the amount of polymer crosslinking and/or coupling is reduced through the use of a suitable diluent. The polymer is maintained in the molten phase during the reaction.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 1988Date of Patent: May 1, 1990Assignee: Shell Oil CompanyInventors: John E. Gorman, John A. Morris

Patent number: 4921910Abstract: Functionalized thermoplastics such as styrene-maleic anhydride copolymers or maleated polyolefins may be toughened with halogenated rubbers which are copolymers of isoprene and isobutylene provided a dialkyl or dihydroxyalkyl amino alkanol is present as a compatibilizer. The toughened thermoplastics have about a two fold increase in IZOD impact resistance.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 1989Date of Patent: May 1, 1990Assignee: Polysar LimitedInventors: James Lunt, Susan A. Patent number: 4914157Abstract: There is disclosed a process for enhancing the rate of cure of a sulfur vulcanizable rubber. Addition of a hydroformylated rubber to a sulfur vulcanizable rubber enhances the rate of cure and concomitantly improves the rubber/filler interaction of the vulcanized rubber.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 1988Date of Patent: April 3, 1990Assignee: The Goodyear Tire & Rubber CompanyInventors: Lawson G. Wideman, Thomas J. Botzman, George Jalics

Patent number: 4910245Abstract: Thermoplastic vulcanizates are prepared by curing, at least partially by dynamic vulcanization, blends of chlorinated polyethylene and crystalline thermoplastic polymers such as polypropylene. Inclusion of a plasticizing material or extender oil, e.g. trioctyl trimellitate, enhances softness and oil resistance of the blends. Vulcanizing materials include a basic material, normally added with the chlorinated polyethylene, and (1) a derivative of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3, 4-thiadiazole or (2) a combination of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole and an activator material such as an amine having a boiling point of 110.degree. C. or higher and a pk value less than 4.5.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1988Date of Patent: March 20, 1990Assignee: The Dow Chemical CompanyInventors: James H. Flynn, Oliver C. Ainsworth, Robert R. Blanchard
