Abstract: A process is provided for producing a compatibilized polymeric blend. A first thermoplastic polymer and a reactive moiety are provided to a progressive melt kneading apparatus. The reactive moiety comprises a first reactive group capable of reacting with the first thermoplastic polymer but not a second polymer and a second reactive group capable of reacting with the second polymer but not the first polymer. The first thermoplastic polymer and the reactive moiety are then melt kneaded so that the first reactive group reacts with the first thermoplastic polymer and the second reactive group is grafted to the first thermoplastic polymer, forming a molten self-compatibilizer. A molten second polymer is then provided. The molten self-compatibilizer is melt kneaded with the molten second polymer so that the second reactive group reacts with the second polymer to form a compatibilized polymeric blend. Also provided are articles formed from the compatibilized polymer blend.

  • Patent number: 7390855
Abstract: A new family of concrete admixture additives can be derived from reacting a mixture of olefins/cyclic olefins-maleic anhydride copolymers and methoxy polyethylene glycol amines and/or polyethylene glycol monoalkyl ethers, or a mixture of styrene-maleic anhydride copolymers and methoxy polyethylene glycol amines and/or polyethylene glycol monoalkyl ethers, or a mixture of styrene-olefins/cyclic olefins-maleic anhydride terpolymers and methoxy polyethylene glycol amines and/or polyethylene glycol monoalkyl ethers. These reactions lead to formation of a kind of carboxylic salt containing polymer, which can be used alone in concrete. Only a small amount of this substance is needed to provide excellent water reduction, high concrete flowability and high early strength.

  • Patent number: 7232863
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for making nongelled functional addition polymers from linear unsaturated anhydrides. The method subjects a linear unsaturated anhydride compound, an active hydrogen compound, and an epoxide compound to reaction conditions such that each of the following three reactions occur: (i) polymerization of polymerizable C?C bonds, (ii) ring opening of an anhydride functional group of the linear unsaturated anhydride compound by the active hydrogen compound to create an acid functional group, and (iii) reaction of the acid functional group resulting from the anhydride ring opening with the epoxide compound. At the time of reaction (iii), the acid functional group resulting from the anhydride ring opening may be selected from an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, a polymer, or both.
