  • Publication number: 20120232185
Abstract: A biodegradable polymer and its manufacturing method are disclosed. The biodegradable polymer comprises high molecular weight polymer and degradation enhancing polymeric additive. The degradation enhancing polymeric additive is a low molecular weight poly-3-hydroxybutyrate that has a weight-average molecular weight in the range of 50˜2500 g/mole and it can occupies 5%˜30% of the total weight percentage of the biodegradable polymer. The biodegradable polymer and the method for manufacturing the same produce unsaturated compounds of crotonic acid oligomer, which is a low molecular weight poly-3-hydroxybutyrate used as a degradation enhancing polymeric additive, through the degradation process of PHB material and then blend it into high molecular weight polymer. By using its property of easily being degraded by bacteria, the biodegradability and bio-compatibility of the general high molecular weight polymer can be improved.

A DPEG may be effective in targeting cancerous tumors through an enhanced permeation and retention effect (EPR). The DPEG will then degrade in the acidic extracellular fluid of solid tumors leading to fast cellular internalizations, finally degrading in the lysosome for efficient renal clearance. These may be used in conjunction with drugs and/or targeting groups. Furthermore, DPEGs are thermoresponsive, on an as needed basis, making them useful for in vivo application.

Abstract: A biodegradable packaging film is provided. The film is formed from a blend that contains a thermoplastic starch and polylactic acid. Starch is a relatively inexpensive natural polymer that is also renewable and biodegradable. Polylactic acid is likewise an inexpensive synthetic polymer that is biodegradable and renewable, yet also capable of providing increased tensile strength to the film. Although providing a good combination of biodegradability/renewability and increased tensile strength, the polylactic acid is also relatively rigid and can result in films having a relatively high stiffness (e.g., high modulus of elasticity) and low ductility. While more ductile than polylactic acid, the thermoplastic starch is often difficult to melt process in film forming processes and very sensitive to moisture and water vapor, reducing its ability to be used as a stand alone packaging film.

When forming the proton exchange membrane, first, a bismaleimide and barbituric acid are copolymerized to form a hyper-branched polymer. Next, the solvent of the sulfonated tetrafluorethylene copolymer (Nafion) aqueous solution is replaced with dimethyl acetamide (DMAc). 10 to 15 parts by weight of the hyper-branched polymer is added to 90 to 85 parts by weight of the Nafion in the DMAc solution, stood and heated to 50° C. for inter-penetration of the hyper-branched polymer and the Nafion. The heated solution is coated on a substrate, baked, and pre-treated to remove residue solvent to complete formation of the proton exchange membrane.
