  • Patent number: 8541517
Abstract: Stable, high performance polymer compositions including polybenzimidazole (PBI) and a melamine-formaldehyde polymer, such as methylated, poly(melamine-co-formaldehyde), for forming structures such as films, fibers and bulky structures. The polymer compositions may be formed by combining polybenzimidazole with the melamine-formaldehyde polymer to form a precursor. The polybenzimidazole may be reacted and/or intertwined with the melamine-formaldehyde polymer to form the polymer composition. For example, a stable, free-standing film having a thickness of, for example, between about 5 ?m and about 30 ?m may be formed from the polymer composition. Such films may be used as gas separation membranes and may be submerged into water for extended periods without crazing and cracking. The polymer composition may also be used as a coating on substrates, such as metal and ceramics, or may be used for spinning fibers. Precursors for forming such polymer compositions are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5580931
Abstract: A method for property modification of bulk polymers, by initially treating a short chain monomeric organic acid, having a carboxylic group (with dissociation constant between 10.sup.-2 to 10.sup.-6 cm.sup.-1, and less than 8 carbons); with a Group IA, IIA or IIB metal, metal oxide, peroxide, hydroxide, or halogens, for forming a metal ligand or complex metal salt of the acid. The bulk polymers are mixed with the complex metal salts and free radicals are introduced into the mixture by means of oxidizing materials, to functionalize the bulk polymer with ionic polymerization sites. A copolymer formation is effected between the monomeric organic metal salt anion and the bulk polymer, as catalyzed by the metal cation, at such sites. The polymerization is a substantially non-cross linked ionic one resulting from the dissociation parameters and the short chain length of the complex metal salt, which is maintained prior to copolymer formation.

  • Patent number: 5399611
Abstract: This invention relates to novel hydroxy-functional polyester diluents, and more particularly, to acrylic-modified hydroxy-functional polyester reactive diluents useful for blending with a variety of thermosetting or thermoplastic film-forming polymers. More specifically, the hydroxy-functional polyester reactive diluents are essentially low molecular weight polyesters derived from triols, and a combination of unsaturated monocarboxylic acids and saturated monocarboxylic acids. These hydroxy-functional polyester diluents may be copolymerized with one or more acrylic monomers, i.e. hydroxy-functional acrylic monomers, and blended with a variety of thermosetting or thermoplastic film-forming polymers. These blends of the film-forming polymers and the hydroxy-functional polyester diluents can be crosslinked with conventional crosslinking agents such as isocyanates and used in the formulation of low VOC paint compositions particularly useful as automotive topcoats.
