Patent number: 6281319Abstract: A high refractive index, foldable polymer suitable for use in ophthalmic devices, such as intraocular lenses, is provided. The polymer may be produced from a polymerization reaction of first, second and third monomeric components and a crosslinking agent. The first monomeric component includes an aryl acrylate or an aryl methacrylate. The second monomeric component, which is not an acrylate, includes a monomer having an aromatic ring with a substituent having at least one site of ethylenic unsaturation. The third monomeric component includes a high water content hydrogel-forming monomer. The resulting high refractive index copolymer is durable enough to be cut and polished when dry, and becomes soft and foldable when hydrated.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 1999Date of Patent: August 28, 2001Assignee: Surgidev CorporationInventor: Khalid Mentak

Patent number: 5869583Abstract: The process for the controlled radical (co)polymerization of (meth)acrylic and/or vinyl monomers is characterized in that the bulk, solution, emulsion or suspension polymerization or copolymerization is carried out, at a temperature at which can fall to 0.degree. C., of at least one of the said monomers in the presence of an initiating system comprising a radical-generating compound and at least one catalyst composed of a metal complex containing a ligand of the type?4-R.sup.3 -2,6-(CH.sub.2 NR.sup.1 R.sup.2).sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.2 !--(I)in which: R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, which are identical or different, represent a branched or unbranched C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group or a phenyl group or alternatively R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 form, with the nitrogen atom to which they are connected, a cyclic amine or alternatively the two R.sup.2 groups, taken together, form a polymethylene bridge and R.sup.3 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl or benzyl group or an electron-donating or electron-withdrawing functional group.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 1997Date of Patent: February 9, 1999Assignee: Elf Atochem S.A.Inventors: Claude Granel, Philippe Teyssie, Robert Jerome, Pascal Nicol

Patent number: 5567788Abstract: A liquid resin-forming composition contains a polyether-ene such as a polyallyl glycidyl ether, a free radical-polymerizable monomer such as an acrylate ester, a free radical initiator such as an organic peroxide and/or an organic hydroperoxide and a promoter such as an amine and/or polyvalent metal carboxylate. Certain properties of the composition, specifically, its volatiles content, flash point and viscosity, can be such as to make the composition particularly useful for application to a solid permeable substrate such as a concrete structure where, upon curing, the resulting resin will heal and/or seal pores and/or small cracks in the substrate preventing or lessening its penetration by liquids.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1993Date of Patent: October 22, 1996Assignee: Rhone-Poulenc Inc.Inventor: Charles A.
