Abstract: The thermal degradation of the biodegradable bacterial polyesters poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), PHB, and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate), PHB/V produces a macromer, especially a 1000-6000 g/mol macromolecule, which contains an unsaturated end group as well as a carboxylic acid end group. The macromers may be polymerized to produce homopolymers and copolymers for different applications in which amphiphilic and biocompatible properties are required, for example, drug delivery systems.

Abstract: Mercaptans are normally used as chain transfer agents in emulsion polymerizations. The mercaptans used in commercial applications are typically complex mixtures of hundreds of similar compounds having boiling points within a narrow range. The chain transfer activity of different mercaptans with such mixtures can vary substantially. To further complicate the situation, the distribution of various mercaptans can also vary substantially between lots of material obtained from commercial sources. Thus, consistent molecular weight control is typically difficult to attain in free radical emulsion polymerizations. This invention is based upon the unexpected discovery that dibenzyltrithiocarbonate will act as a pure compound to effectively and consistently control molecular weight in free radical emulsion polymerizations. The polydispersity of polymers made using dibenzyltrithiocarbonate as a molecular weight regulator is similar to that obtained using conventional mercaptan systems.

Abstract: An invention is disclosed which pertains to components for gel coat compositions, a process for making such gel coat compositions, and a process for making gel coated articles. Low molecular weight unsaturated polymers which incorporate multiple pendent and/or terminal acrylic or methacrylic vinyl groups are made by the addition polymerization of acrylate/methacrylate monomers with epoxy acrylates such as glycidyl methacrylate, followed by ring opening of the oxirane via action of an (meth)acrylic acid in combination with a ring-opening catalyst to produce the final unsaturated polymer. Gel coat compositions containing such polymers possess improved rheological properties and may be used to create durable in-mold coatings for articles requiring good hydrolytic stability and UV resistance.

Abstract: Processes for the living polymerization of olefin monomers with terminal carbon-carbon double bonds are disclosed. The processes employ initiators that include a metal atom and a ligand having two group 15 atoms and a group 16 atom or three group 15 atoms. The ligand is bonded to the metal atom through two anionic or covalent bonds and a dative bond. The initiators are particularly stable under reaction conditions in the absence of olefin monomer. The processes provide polymers having low polydispersities, especially block copolymers having low polydispersities. It is an additional advantage of these processes that, during block copolymer synthesis, a relatively small amount of homopolymer is formed.

  • Patent number: 5889128

  • Patent number: 5753785
Abstract: A process of polymerizing ethylene with a catalyst using a single metallocene catalyst comprising a bridged metallocene compound having two cyclopentadienyl rings, one substituted with a bulky group in a distal position and one substituted such that a fused ring, substituted or unsubstituted, is formed, which produces a copolymer of ethylene. The metallocene catalyst promotes simultaneous oligomerization of a fraction of ethylene to form a comonomer in situ and copolymerization of the remaining ethylene and the comonomer to form a copolymer.

  • Patent number: 5733980
Abstract: This invention relates to block polymers containing both crystalline and elastomeric blocks, the block copolymer having an A block and a B block. The A block is a polyethylene or an ethylene polymer optionally containing an alpha-olefin and is generally crystalline. The B block contains an ethylene, .alpha.-olefin copolymer segment and optionally contain an ethylene, .alpha.-olefin, non-conjugated diene terpolymer segment. If the B block contains a diene containing segment, the diene containing segment is furthest from the junction of the A and the B blocks. Also disclosed is a process for manufacture of the block copolymers and methods for coupling the block copolymers. Coupled block copolymers are useful as thermoplastic elastomers exhibiting physical properties approaching those of crosslinked EP or EPDM elastomers, but showing thermal processability after coupling.

  • Patent number: 5527866
Abstract: Nondigestible fat compositions useful as replacements for triglyceride fats or oils in foods are disclosed. These compositions have relatively flat solid Fat Content (SFC) profile slopes between typical room temperature and body temperature. The nondigestible fat compositions comprise a liquid nondigestible oil and nondigestible solid polyol polyester particles dispersed in the oil in an amount sufficient to control passive oil loss. The solid polyol polyester particles of the composition herein comprise from about 10% to 50% polyol polyester polymer and from 50% to about 90% polyol polyester monomer. The polyol polyester material which forms these solid particles must contain a relatively high proportion of long chain saturated fatty acid ester groups. Edible fat-containing products comprising these nondigestible fats can be less waxy tasting due to the lower level of solids required for passive oil loss control.
