  • Patent number: 5064934
Abstract: Thermosetting Schiff base resins, their preparation and their applications re described. These thermosetting Schiff base resins can be defined as responding to the general formula: ##STR1## Radicals Ar.sub.1, Ar.sub.2 and Ar.sub.3 are chosen so that the softening temperature of the resins is less than about 150.degree. C.The resins can be prepared by direct condensation of an ethynyl benzaldehyde or acetophenone on a telechelic diamine oligomer obtained by reaction of a diamine containing flexibilizing groups on a derivative of benzhydrol tetracarboxylic acid. These Schiff base resins can be used by bulk thermal polymerization particularly to prepare adhesives or composite matrices.

Thus, the polyformal macromer may have a acryloyl, allyl, or styryl head group. Macromers of polyformal block copolymers are formed sequentially by first forming the block of first formal and then without isolating the macromer so formed, sequentially polymerizing a second formal monomer to form the second formal block. • Patent number: 4523007
Abstract: A process for producing improved crosslinking components for paint binders which can be crosslinked through transesterification is described. The process is characterized in that an ester of malonic or cyano-acetic acid or aceto-acetic acid is reacted in a KNOEVENAGEL-reaction with a carbonyl compound, preferably with formaldehyde, and the reaction products are polymerized, optionally utilizing free-radical initiators, to provide a polymer having a molecular weight of between about 300 and 6000. The crosslinking components prepared according to the invention provide an unsaponifiable base structure and permit the preparation of products with high functionality. The crosslinking components are preferably utilized in binder systems for cathodically depositable paints.

  • Patent number: 4506069
Abstract: A prepolymer for use in preparing a binder for low vulnerability gun propellants. The condensation of an alkynediol and formaldehyde produces a prepolymer which is cured with a polyisocyanate. The resulting binder can be combined with 1,3,5,7-tetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX) or 1,3,5-trimethylenetrinitramine (RDX), and is readily extruded as multi-perforated propellant grains, the extruded material having a greatly reduced tendency to slumping, and an enhanced mass impetus value.

  • Patent number: 4380610
Abstract: This invention relates to "comb" polymers having high molecular weight and related structurally to polyoxymethylene, but having improved thermal stability. In addition, this invention relates to a method for preparing these high molecular weight "comb" polymers and teaches a process which exhibits reduced reactor fouling and produces a free-flowing powder. Generally the improved polymer is made by copolymerizing trioxane with polyanhydride or copolymerizing trioxane with copolymers of olefins and anhydrides. The improved polymer can optionally be reacted with agents known to react with terminal hydroxy groups to end-cap the polymer.
