  • Patent number: 5987847
Abstract: A machine and method for wrapping cylindrical workpieces such as rolls of bathroom tissue and paper towel. The machine includes a workpiece infeed conveyor, a wrapping paper feeder, a rotating carousel having a plurality of pockets, and a discharge conveyor. A piece of wrapping paper supplied by the paper feeder is perforated and burst into a single sheet. The sheet and a workpiece are directed into a pocket in the rotating carousel whereby the sheet is banded around the periphery of the workpiece by a clamping plate, underfolder plate, and brush. Next a pair of stuffer spindles driven by a barrel cam and a pair of rotating star wheels whose compound motion is derived from geneva wheels fold and tuck the wrapping paper around the parallel sides and into the center tube of each workpiece. The wrapped workpieces are ejected from the rotating carousel onto a discharge conveyor. Alternative folder mechanisms include folding fingers. The method of wrapping is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5795434
Abstract: As tape drawer rollers are driven for intermittent rotation, a continuous tape is intermittently fed along a tape traveling path with a leading end portion of the tape inserted through a ring at a tape folding section. When the continuous tape has been fed by a predetermined length, the feeding of the tape is stopped and then the lower end portion of the tape inserted through the ring is bent about the ring by a first bending member. Then a cutting device severs a predetermined length of tape strip off the continuous tape, whereupon the an upper half of the severed tape strip is bent about the ring by a second bending member, thus providing a folded tape strip having a laminate portion. Finally the folded tape strip is discharged out of a machine after part of its laminate portion is fused by a fusing device.

  • Patent number: 5782058
Abstract: A method and apparatus for wrapping coils of metallic strip and the like to protect against atmospheric corrosion are described. A plastic film sleeve is inserted through the open cylindrical centre and held in place by flanged collars at each end. The sleeve is turned back over the collars and the ends are loosely stuffed into the open cylindrical centre. The entire coil is then cocoon wrapped using relatively wide stretch-wrap film. The cocoon wrapping is then sealed to the turned-over sleeve in the vicinity of the end collars so as to seal the coil within a continuous plastic film. The excess cocoon wrapping and sleeve material overlying the cylindrical centre can be trimmed away to leave an open centre to receive coil handling equipment.

  • Patent number: 5121584
Abstract: The drum (5) is at the station of wrapping and extraction of a coil of material wound on the segments (16) and bounded by the radial arms (24 and 21). Once the wrapping film has been placed about the coil of material and the arms (24 and 21), the cross-piece (17) is advanced so that the arms (21) are overturned backward and can be extracted from the front inner edge of the wrapping. Next, the pushers (28) move the wrapped coil of material by pressing against the rear flank of the wrapping between the arms (24). The latter pivot towards the front against the bias of the springs (26) so that their outer ends also pass under the inside edge of the rear flank of the wrapping. When the jack (19) returns the cross-piece (17) to its starting position, the arms (21) are righted by the action of the ramps (23). This device permits choosing the inside diameter of the coils of material at will, without being hindered by the presence of the radial arms (21).
