The packaging system also includes a boxing apparatus which relies on pneumatically-actuated positioning mechanisms to move stacks of articles to discrete positions within boxes. Both the position and the velocity of the pneumatic mechanisms are utilized as feedback to provide increased speed without compromising positioning accuracy.

A spring biased free floating compression section has a pair of opposed compression belt assemblies that are yieldably spring biased toward each other to apply pressure to the ends of the containers to set the adhesive, thus sealing the ends of the packaged cartons shut. When the cartons are sealed, they are ejected from the packaging machine by a pair of opposed ejector belt assemblies.

A transfer belt receives fruit from an transfer source and transfers fruit to a distribution belt once the transfer belt has accumulated a predetermined, staged pattern of fruit. While fruit is transferred from the transfer belt, the distribution belt reciprocates into a bin, which is held in a sideways loading position. As the distribution belt retracts out of the bin, it discharges its load of fruit. The bin is lowered in pre-determined increments between discharge cycles of the distribution belt, so that the fruit is deposited into the bin one layer at a time.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for loading a bin with articles such as fruit. The flaps successively carry rows of the articles along an upper run from a take-up end to a discharge end, at which end the articles are dropped off of the flap. A second flap, moving along a lower run in a direction opposite to the upper run, gently catches the dropped articles, and deposits the articles in the bin. Subsequent flaps moving along the lower run then sweep the deposited articles away from the drop location and toward to other end of the bin, allowing the articles to pile up at that end.

    Abstract: A bagger for fruit or other discrete articles ensures that the bag has a minimum weight of fruit but with the lowest overage practical. A weigh pan is fed by a first conveyor having a number of singulating lanes, with an individual weigh chute at the end of each lane. The conveyor is controlled to stop filling the pan once a certain number of articles (sensed by photosensors) have passed into the pan which is less than the expected number of articles which will meet the minimum weight of articles to be bagged. Then the individual weigh chutes are loaded with one article each, and the individual or combinations of weights of one or more articles from the weigh chutes are calculated. The desired individual combination is selected which causes the weight of articles in the pan to exceed the predetermined weight by the lowest amount, and that desired individual or combination of articles is fed to the pan, the weight is confirmed in the pan, then the pan tilted to discharge the articles.

An optimum utilization of space in the final packing case is attained by the receptacles due to the overlapping of their pointed end portions.

The servo motor moves the packing mechanism through a packing stroke and a return stroke with each stroke having an acceleration stage and a deceleration stage.

The head assembly is then retracted and swung from its horizontal position to a vertical position. Also, the lateral distances between the flexible pouches as they are held by their respective grippers can be expanded or contracted by using an air cylinder to actuate a rocker arm. A programmable controller coordinates all air control valve and solenoid activity.

The vacuum draws individual tablets down from the fluidized bed and into the cavities in the slat bar, thereby ensuring efficient and complete filling of each cavity with a tablet. Upon exit from the fluidized bed, the vacuum flow is disconnected and, in certain embodiments, a positive airflow may be flowed through the vacuum ports to eject the tablets into means for feeding the tablets into bottles.

The cartons--between the packing of the bottom layer and the packing of the top layer--are conveyed between positions underlying the plunger arrays. Thus each carton has is lower layer packed by the lower layer loading plunger array and then its top layer packed by the upper layer loading plunger array.
