Patent number: 7320203Abstract: In a method for packaging articles, a tubular blank is conveyed in flat folded configuration to an erecting station to be engaged and rotated by suction cups. The raised blank assumes a parallelepiped shape with a vertical axis, while a striker hit a lateral wall of the blank, so that the blank is erected in a box. While the box is being moved, first and second lower flaps are then folded before the blank is set resting on a support plane and moved, by driving and guiding conveyors, to a filling station for insertion of articles, supplied along a vertical direction, into the box. Lastly, the box with the articles therein is moved by the driving and guiding conveyors to subsequent stations for folding lower lateral flaps and upper flaps to close bottom and cover of the so obtained box. A machine is provided for carrying out the method, with an erecting station and a filling station joined by a horizontal support plane.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2006Date of Patent: January 22, 2008Assignee: Marchesini Group S.p.A.Inventor: Giuseppe Monti

Patent number: 6056918Abstract: The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for sterilizing cartons with vapor-phase hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet radiation on a packaging machine. A partially formed carton is first sprayed at a bottom forming station with a sterilant. Then, the carton is transported to a sterilization station where the carton is sprayed with gaseous hydrogen peroxide thereby allowing the gas to condense on the packaging material. The carton is then conveyed to a UV radiation source for irradiation of the packaging material. The carton is then dried with heated air to flush/remove any residual hydrogen peroxide. The present invention sterilizes the carton allowing for filling of the packaging material with a desired product such as milk, juice or water. The invention allows for the efficacious use of hydrogen peroxide having a concentration of up to 53% while providing a packaging material having less than 0.5 ppm hydrogen peroxide.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 1998Date of Patent: May 2, 2000Assignee: Tetra Laval Holdings & Finance, SAInventors: Sevugan Palaniappan, Ronald Swank, Terry Erickson, John Lees, John Cicha, Michael Robertson

Patent number: 6050063Abstract: A carton opening method and assembly for a continuous motion packaging machine directs opposed carton engaging plates perpendicular to opposite side walls of a collapsed carton moving through the opening assembly. A vacuum is applied to the opposed carton side walls when the assemblies engage the carton. One or more of the opposed carton engaging assemblies are retracted to fully open the carton, which is then transferred to a conveyor that transports the carton to the next workstation of the packaging machine. The carton opening operation is accomplished while tracking the carton movement through the carton opening assembly.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 1998Date of Patent: April 18, 2000Assignee: Riverwood International CorporationInventors: Colin Ford, Jeff Disrud

Patent number: 5896728Abstract: An air jet carton reopening apparatus for use with an article cartoning machine. The apparatus produces a stream of pressurized gas or a gas mixture that opens carton sleeves to receive articles for packaging. The air jet apparatus comprises a gas emitting mechanism, a gas supply connected to the gas emitting mechanism, and a positioning mechanism constructed and arranged to dispose the gas emitting mechanism operationally adjacent to the carton sleeves. The stream of pressurized gas is directed at the carton sleeve such that it opens and maintains the relatively rectangular dimensions of the carton sleeves to permit the article cartoning machine to successfully load articles into an optimally sized carton.Type: GrantFiled: March 25, 1997Date of Patent: April 27, 1999Assignee: Riverwood International Corp.Inventors: Bruce D. Patent number: 5894711Abstract: A box handling apparatus having particular application in the packaging of semiconductor wafers, includes a box opening assembly which can unlatch a lid from a bottom of the box and separate the lid from the bottom. Arms can grip an article, such as a wafer cassette, in the bottom of the box and lift it out. The cassette can be loaded, or wafers already in the cassette unloaded. The apparatus can replace the loaded cassette in the bottom of the box and latchingly re-engage the lid.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 1997Date of Patent: April 20, 1999Assignee: MEMC Electronic Materials, Inc.Inventors: James P. Patent number: 5842328Abstract: The combination of a carrier for a container, a squaring plate, a drive for the squaring plate, and a sealing assembly. The carrier accepts a container having first and second spaced flat walls that are substantially parallel to each other with the container in an erected state and third and fourth walls each connecting between the first and second flat walls. The carrier has a first edge against which the first wall of the container can be abutted so that the first wall is thereby supported in a first orientation with the container operatively held by the carrier. The squaring plate is guided in movement relative to the carrier towards the first edge.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1997Date of Patent: December 1, 1998Assignee: Tetra Laval Holdings & Finance, SAInventor: Shigehiro Kinoshita

Patent number: 5836508Abstract: The invention provides a method of forming a pre-wrapped gift package which appears to be hand wrapped. It includes forming a sheet of box material with affixed decorative paper into a flattened box tube. The box material is provided with flaps so that a consumer may erect the tube into an open box and use the flaps to form end closures. A volume sizer is provided in the form of creased box material which, when erected, provides an illustration of the volume made available when the pre-wrapped gift box is erected. Box loading devices are provided in the form of inner sleeves and mechanical devices into which the gift is placed before insertion into the pre-wrapped gift box. Side loading, top-opening configurations provide additional support for the pre-wrapped appearance.Type: GrantFiled: January 3, 1997Date of Patent: November 17, 1998Inventor: Tommy R. Savage
