Patent number: 4539793Abstract: An improved method for forming closed burstable pouches having breakable seals. The method includes selection of a laminated polymeric film which has two principal layers--an outer layer which is responsive, and an inner layer which is non-responsive, to a radio-frequency (RF) welding field, the inner layer being of a biaxially-oriented polymeric material such that its cohesive strength in its thickness direction is less than the cohesive strength of the outer layer. The outer layer has a higher melting point than the inner layer. With two sheets of such material placed with their inner surfaces in contact, the breakable seal is formed by applying an RF welding field for a time and at an intensity to heat the outer layers sufficiently to fuse the inner layers by heat transfer from the outer layers without melting the outer layers and without destroying the biaxially-oriented structure of the inner layer.Type: GrantFiled: March 5, 1984Date of Patent: September 10, 1985Assignee: S. C. Johnson & Son, Inc.Inventor: Edward J. Malek

Patent number: 4504350Abstract: A cap heat-sealing apparatus for paper containers comprises a vertically movable head, a fixed pressing member provided on the bottom surface of the head, a pair of divided movable pressing members arranged around the fixed pressing member and connected to the head so as to be horizontally movable toward or away from the fixed pressing member, and a heating high-frequency coil attached to the head and surrounding the fixed pressing member. The fixed pressing member has an outer periphery shaped to position along the inner surfaces of heat-sealing container opening edge fitting portions of inverted V-shaped cross section formed at the outer periphery of a square paper cap, which has an aluminum foil layer. The movable pressing members have an inner periphery shaped to position along the outer surfaces of the fitting portions. The high-frequency coil is spaced apart from the fixed pressing member by a clearance for the fitting portions to enter.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 1983Date of Patent: March 12, 1985Assignee: Shikoku Kakooki Co., Ltd.Inventor: Katsuhiro Joo

Patent number: 4403465Abstract: Apparatus and method for forming sealed joints, including a pouring lip sanitarily protected therein, by welding layers of thermoplastic coated paperboard together. Paperboard layers are pressed together by jaws, with relieved areas where excessive pressure would render pouring lip less satisfactory, while or after heat is applied to said paperboard layers. The apparatus and method is particularly useful for forming sealed joints for paperboard cartons, such as milk cartons.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 1982Date of Patent: September 13, 1983Assignee: Nimco CorporationInventor: George L. Patent number: 3972758Abstract: The invention refers to a method of forming over the edge of a plastic jacket against a workpiece using vibratory energy. Specifically, the workpiece and jacket are disposed on a resiliently mounted anvil. As the jacket forms over and shortens its axial length, the anvil is displaced to provide a decreasing engagement force between the jacket and the horn of the vibratory apparatus. As a result, the jacket is free of scars or distortions in the region of forming.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 1975Date of Patent: August 3, 1976Assignee: Branson Ultrasonics CorporationInventor: James E.
