Patent number: 5058366Abstract: A stirrup for a horse saddle has a cylindrical stirrup bolt assembly attached across an open end of the stirrup and, in a conventional fashion, the bolt assembly rests in the bottom loop of a stirrup strap which is attached to the saddle fender to hold the stirrup in place during normal use. The stirrup bolt assembly comprises an outer housing with rotatable and axially movable pins or rods which have keyed outer ends extending out the end of the housing for engaging keyed openings at the open end of the stirrup with a spring within the cylindrical housing applying a force to the pins to hold them in engagement with the stirrup keyed openings. A helically shaped slot or groove on the outer surface of the pins is engaged by fingers attached to the cylindrical housing so as the stirrup swings in an arc with respect to the stirrup strap the fingers act in the slot to apply a force in opposition to the spring force to pull the pins axially inward.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 1990Date of Patent: October 22, 1991Inventor: Michael J. Patent number: 4969316Abstract: An improved, low-cost safety stirrup (10) is provided having a release feature which permits safe removal of a rider's foot 26 in the vent of a fall or other mishap, and which also includes a shock-absorbing mechanism (15) and anti-rotation structure (31, 44) for preventing undesirable stirrup turning. The stirrup (10) advantageously includes a unitary metallic frame (12) presenting a tubular upper end (28) and a cantilever, footpad-supporting lower base (40). A footpad assembly (16) including a resilient, synthetic resin, U-shaped member, presenting at its bight, a footpad (56) is removably affixed to the frame base (40). An inboard keeper wall (58) extends upwardly from the footpad (56) to prevent escape of the rider's foot (26) during normal riding, but yields and bends open to permit the rider's foot (26) to clear the stirrup (10) in the event of a fall or the like.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 1989Date of Patent: November 13, 1990Inventor: Roy L. Patent number: 4869053Abstract: A stirrup for a horse riding saddle has a cylindrical bolt attached across its open end which, in a conventional fashion, rests in the bottom loop of a stirrup strap which in turn is attached to the saddle fender to hold the stirrup in place. The bolt comprises a cylindrical sleeve with movable pins or rods having keyed outer ends extending axially out of the sleeve for engaging keyed openings at the open end of the stirrup and a spring within the sleeve applies a force to the pins to disengage them from the keyed openings while a greater and opposite force is applied by radially extending finger means to hold the pins in place. If the stirrup swings in an arc with respect to the stirrup strap which exceeds a predetermined angle the force applied by the finger is disengaged from the pins so that the force of the spring takes over and disengages the pins from the keyed openings in the stirrup to allow the stirrup to fall free.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1988Date of Patent: September 26, 1989Inventors: Buck Bradford, Michael J. Patent number: 4680921Abstract: A safety stirrup detachably connected to the stirrup-leather in order to release the rider's foot in the event of a fall comprises a coupling device having two jaws for clamping the top portion of the stirrup head. A forward pivotal displacement of the stirrup with respect to the stirrup-leather causes rotation of a cam provided at the upper end of the stirrup head. The two jaws are opened-out by a top wedge of the cam through an angle of approximately 30.degree. to 45.degree. while a bottom wedge of the cam increases the separation of the jaws, thus releasing the stirrup.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 1986Date of Patent: July 21, 1987Inventor: Michel Bezin

Patent number: 4399646Abstract: A safety stirrup has a forward guard and safety release which is pivotally mounted to a U-shaped member. The U-shaped member is reinforced by a sole plate and hangs from the saddle by a ring placed such that the stirrup naturally extends outwardly from the horse. The stirrup is very safe since both of the rider's hands are free during mounting to control the horse, the sole plate protects the rider's foot, and the safety release prevents the rider's foot from being hung-up in the stirrup.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1981Date of Patent: August 23, 1983Inventor: Lundie P.
