A substantial portion of particulates entrained in the suction airstream are separated therefrom when said suction airstream moves in a cyclonic fashion through the cyclonic chamber.

When the fluid encounters the particulate filter, the vortex is generally stopped, and additional released gasses rise through the open top of the particulate filter. A check valve is located at the outlet of the outlet chamber to shut off flow when the device contains excess gas. The priming system in the form of a pillow block is arranged to force air or fluid upward to dislodge the check valve, should it become stuck in the valve seat.

The cyclonic filter assembly uses the centrifugal forces to separate large pieces of debris from the fluid and a filter to separate the remaining unwanted debris from the fluid. The present invention can be contained in a compact single housing which may be disassembled for easy cleaning and replacement of parts. The cyclonic filter assembly of the present invention has a vertically oriented cylindrical tube which receives a tangential injection of the debris laden fluid. The tangential injection causes the fluid to circulate around a cylindrical vortex finder which is inside of and coaxial with the tube. The centrifugal forces acting on the debris causes the debris to move outward away from the center of the vortex. The vortex finder has an opening which pulls in the relatively clean fluid near the center of the vortex while the debris laden fluid settles into a collection chamber below the cylindrical tube.

    Abstract: The invention provides a separator for removing small particulates from an air stream, the separator includes pneumatic separator with a relatively small filter element built inside the separator to remove particulates from the air stream down to as small as one micron. The pneumatic separator relies on a vortex effect and sudden changes in direction of the air flow to strip out most of the particulates, and because the very small particulates have insufficient mass to be dislodged from the air in this way, these particulates remain in the air stream and are carried to the filter element where they build up on the element. The build up is interrupted by the incoming air which flows aggressively around the element and strips parts of the build-up off the element. This ongoing random process can be supplemented if necessary by back flushing. Both the separated particulates and those stripped off the filter element accumulate in the separator for subsequent removal.

The invention also relates to an improved cyclone separator which incorporates a perforated thimble between the downwardly and upwardly moving vortexes in the cyclone separator to reduce the pressure drop across the cyclone separator.
