  • Patent number: 9266057
Abstract: A process is proposed that captures, separates, and enriches carbon dioxide for sequestration after removal from water in equilibrium with air. The proposed process recognizes that carbon dioxide is more soluble in water than other atmospheric gases in air resulting in the proportion of carbon dioxide adsorbed in water from the atmosphere (relative to the other atmospheric gases) being higher than the proportion of carbon dioxide naturally occurring in air. To capitalize on this “convenient truth,” the proposed process aerates (dissolves) in water carbon dioxide gas with other atmospheric gases originating from air in an aerator (aeration) according to Henry's gas law of solubility and then deaerates (strips) these dissolved atmospheric gases from the water in a deaerator (deaeration). The process of aeration and deaeration of these atmospheric gases is repeated multiple times in series until the separated and enriched carbon dioxide gas concentration purity is sufficient for sequestration.

The filter media may further include a water repellant (e.g., a fluorinated species) to impart desirable properties to the media such as high water repellency. The filter media may also have a high efficiency as a function of pressure drop (i.e., high gamma values). In some embodiments, the filter media includes a fiber web which may be formed of various components such as glass fibers. The fiber web can also include additional components such as synthetic fibers, binder components, as well as other additives. The media may be incorporated into a variety of filter element products.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for separating droplets of finely aerosolized elemental mercury from a fluid stream in which the droplets are dispersed, particularly a gaseous stream. In the method, a precious metal wire capillary surface or precious metal-coated wire capillary surface is contacted with the gaseous stream, causing the aerosolized droplets to deposit on the capillary surface and by capillary action to coalesce with other of such droplets. The surface is oriented to allow the mercury to flow by gravitational forces and capillary action to the lowermost portions of the surface, where it accumulates and can be collected. Metallic capillary surfaces comprised of finely braided strands of silver, gold, palladium, platinum, or rhodium wire, or wire coated with one or more of these metals, are particularly preferred.
