  • Patent number: 7811650
Abstract: A honeycomb structure 10 of the present invention comprises: porous honeycomb units 11 having multiple through-holes, including the first form of an inorganic material (for example, ceramic particles), the second form of an inorganic material (for example, inorganic fibers or ceramic particles having large particle sizes), and an inorganic binder; and sealing material layers 14 jointing the porous honeycomb units 11 at outer surfaces 13 where the through-holes are not open. The cross-sectional area perpendicular to the through-holes is about 5 to about 50 cm2. The ratio of the total cross-sectional area of the porous honeycomb units 11 to the cross-sectional area of the honeycomb structure 10 is not less than about 85%. The honeycomb structure 10 reduces thermal stress or vibration applied to each porous honeycomb unit 11, by the sealing material layers 14, and allows for a more effective use of surface on which catalyst components are dispersed.

  • Patent number: 7771517
Abstract: A fluid filter is preferably constructed from a relatively thick batting of high loft, non-woven, fluid permeable fibrous material. The filter batting is then passed through a manufacturing device, which slices the batting in the vertical as to create two continuous filter batts from the parent filter batt. The slicing also creates a relatively deep V-shaped zig zag or waveform pattern in the anterior filter surfaces of the top and bottom of the batt. The top half deep V-shaped zigzag patterns peaks and valleys correspond or line up with the bottom half's valleys and peaks since the waveform landscape of the first child batt is essentially a negative impression of the second child batt. Accordingly, the patterns nest within one another. When separated, the two children batts each comprise a waveform landscape for dynamically directing fluid streams from the anterior filter surface to the posterior filter surface.

  • Patent number: 7709076
Abstract: A honeycomb body is formed of alternating layers that are smooth and partially structured. The layers form cavities that allow a fluid to flow in an axial flow direction. The structured layers have structural extremities in contact with smooth neighboring layers and inverted sections in the vicinity of their structural extremities. The sections protrude into the cavities and have a form approximately inverse of the structural extremities in a cross-section through the honeycomb body that runs perpendicularly to the flow direction in such a way that breaks are formed in the structural extremities. Counter-structures are configured in the vicinity of the inverted sections and/or structural extremities in the smooth layers. The structures engage with the structural extremities and/or inverted section. In the honeycomb body, relative displacements of the two layers in the flow direction are prevented by the co-operation of the inverted sections and the counter-structures.

  • Patent number: 7575793
Abstract: A radial cell ceramic honeycomb structure is provided that is particularly adapted for use as a catalytic carrier or a particulate filter in an automotive or diesel exhaust system. The honeycomb structure includes a network of interconnected webs having a central axis. The network of webs includes radial webs of varying lengths, only some of which substantially extend the entire radial length of the network, and tangential webs that intersect to define rings of gas-conducting radial cells, and a rounded outer skin that surrounds the cells formed by the interconnected webs. The radial webs extending to the periphery of the network join an inner edge of the outer skin in a substantially orthogonal orientation to reduce thermally generated stresses and to increase strength of the resulting structure. The number of radial webs in the network changes along the radial length at transition zones that are defined by one of the tangential webs such that a desired cell density is achieved across the network.

Abstract: An air filter assembly for removing particulate matter from an incoming dirty air stream. The assembly includes a housing having an inlet, an outlet, a dirty air chamber and a clean air chamber and a non-cylindrical shaped elongated filter element arranged within the dirty air chamber constructed to remove particulate matter from an incoming air stream. A plurality of non-cylindrical filter elements are preferred. The non-cylindrical filter elements provide a decreased incoming air stream velocity when compared to conventional cylindrical filter elements having the same surface area. Alternately, the non-cylindrical filter elements allow an increase in the volume of incoming air when compared to conventional cylindrical filter elements having the same surface area.

The filter element according to the invention is configured such that at least the layer forming the filter cloth is provided with spaced-apart alternating crossovers at an angle to the warp and weft threads. The alternating crossovers extend in a zigzag whereby each straight section extends across a same number of warp threads. The alternating crossovers extend from the edges which are parallel to and spaced from the warp wires. The filter element according to the invention is particularly suitable for filtering of emulsions.

Abstract: Filtration method and device for filtering solid contaminants from a stream of a flowing fluid such as internal combustion engine intake air. An imperforate housing has a tubular inlet exiting at its downstream end into a conically divergent first wall section terminating in a maximum diameter apex. A convergent second wall section terminates at a housing outlet opening of greater diameter than that of the housing inlet. A perforate filter element disposed within the housing conical portions has an exterior configuration generally complimental to the housing interior, and thus has a first generally conical divergent section, and a second generally conical downstream section convergent from a maximum diameter apex of the filter element and defining the filter device outlet. The housing and filter element define therebetween first and second frustoconical annular fluid flow chambers of successively diminishing cross-sectional radial thickness in the direction of downstream fluid flow.
