Abstract: Species-linked diamine triacetic acids of the formula ##STR1## wherein T is an organic species containing at least one amine, hydroxyl, or thiol functional group, L is the residue of at least one of those functional groups and R is a two or more atom long covalent bridge, are disclosed. Methods for their preparation, for the preparation of metal chelates from them and for the use of the chelates are also disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, the metal ions employed in the formation of the chelates are rare earth metal ions capable of forming fluorescent chelates which can in turn be employed in fluoroassay techniques.
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for the extraction of a ligand such as molecular oxygen from a first fluid environment and for release of a ligand such as molecular oxygen, as well as ligand carrier compounds therefor comprising linear, pentadentate polyalkylamines and transition metal ions. The carrier compounds have the general formula: ##STR1## where, each of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is independently an organic group including a sulfur, an oxygen or a nitrogen coordinated to M;each of m, n, o, and p is 1, 2, 3, or 4;X is selected from the group consisting of 2,6-pyridyl, 2,6-piperidyl, 2,5-pyrrolyl, 2,4-imidazolyl, substituted heterocyclic amines, --)--, --S--, ##STR2## and ##STR3## where R.sub.3 is hydrogen, lower alkyl or aralkyl; and M is a transition metal ion.

Abstract: An additive for drilling fluids employed in the deep well drilling industry, which additive comprises an organometal compound of titanium, zirconium or vanadium with humic acid and a further organic moiety which is at least one of fatty acid alkoxylates, fatty alcohol polyalkylene glycol ethers, long-chain amine alkoxylates optionally substituted with a hydroxyl group, or water-insoluble polyalkoxylate all of which are optionally mixed with fatty acids, and fatty acids alone, these having optionally been applied onto an inorganic carrier, mandatorily in the case of fatty acids alone. The fluid loss additive prevents the drilling fluid from streaming into porous drill formations. The additive may be prepared by the reaction of a metal alcoholate with a compound providing the organic moiety and humic acid or a humic acid-containing product.

Abstract: A process for preparing hydrocarbon-soluble transition metal salts of organic carboxylic acids having improved properties wherein the transition metal is one capable of having a multiplicity of oxidation states is described. The process comprises the steps of (a) providing at least one transition metal compound wherein the transition metal is at one of its higher positive oxidation states, (b) treating said transition metal compound with at least one inorganic reducing agent forming an intermediate containing the transition metal in a lower positive oxidation state, and (c) reacting said intermediate with at least one organic carboxylic acid containing at least 5 carbon atoms to form the transition metal salt of said carboxylic acid. The transition metal salts prepared in accordance with the process of the invention are useful in a variety of applications including resins, inks, paints, lubricants and fuels.
Abstract: Mixtures of a metal salt of formula ##STR1## and a metal salt of formula ##STR2## in which formulae (1) and (2) Me is a metal ion of valency n,n is 2, 3 or 4, andeach of the rings A and B independently of the other is unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or an .alpha.
