  • Patent number: 7557232
Abstract: The current invention provides compositions, which are useful as stationary phases for a variety of chromatographic applications, such as high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The compositions include a substrate (e.g., silica gel), covalently bound to a compound, which includes both a hydrophobic moiety and a hydrophilic moiety, which is preferably a 1,2-diol moiety. The hydrophobic moiety is sufficiently hydrophobic for the compositions to exhibit reversed phase characteristics and typically incorporates at least 5 carbon atoms in sequence. Based on having both hydrophilic and hydrophobic functionalities, the new stationary phases exhibit unique chromatographic properties. For example, these media can be used in either hydrophilic (HILIC) mode, in which the mobile phase includes a high percentage of an organic solvent, or in reversed phase mode, in which the mobile phase contains a higher percentage of an aqueous solvent.

Abstract: The object of the present invention is to provide a production method of water-soluble silane derivatives, the separation and purification of which are easy, and the reaction for which can be conducted under an industrially practicable temperature condition (under the temperature condition of 90° C. or lower) and to provide compounds with which solid gelatinous external preparations, with excellent stability against a temperature change and against an effect of additives and with excellent usability, can be prepared. The water-soluble silane derivative could be formed by the substitution reaction of a metal alkoxide with a polyhydric alcohol under the presence of a solid catalyst. According to this production method, the separation of the catalyst from the product is very easy, and the reaction can be carried out under the temperature condition of 90° C. or lower.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are a surface modifier for metal oxide particles and a method of modifying the surface of metal oxide particles using the same. The surface modifier consists either of an alkylsilanepolyol containing a cyclic alkyl group capable of imparting steric hindrance or of a mixture of said alkylsilanepolyol with alkylalkoxysilane, and the method of modifying the surface of metal oxide particles comprises coating the surface modifier on the hydrophilic surface of the metal oxide particles through chemical bonding so as to impart hydrophobicity or amphiphilicity (hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity) and reactivity to the surface of the metal oxide particles.
