  • Patent number: 4400930
Abstract: A harvester in the form of a self-propelled combine (11) has a crop header (24) and conveying means (31, 32) feeding crop material to a threshing rotor (34). The speed of rotation of the rotor (34) is adjustable by changing the speed of a variable speed belt drive (50) in the drive train from an engine (16) to the threshing rotor (34). The variable speed belt drive (50) is of a type whose speed ratio cannot be changed unless it is running. A special rotor clutch (71) is interposed between the variable speed belt drive (50) and the threshing rotor (34) to permit the variable speed drive to be disconnected from the threshing rotor. Thus, when the rotor (34) stops rotating because of excess crop material, the rotor clutch (71) may be operated to break the power train between the variable speed belt drive (50) and the threshing rotor (34) and the variable speed belt drive (50) may be run and adjusted to a lower output speed.

  • Patent number: 4325210
Abstract: An idler sheave assembly for a lawn mower which is simple in construction and which maintains the tension in the mower drive belt at any vertical position of the mower. The idler sheave assembly is supported on a U-shaped yoke which is pivotally supported on the mower tow bar linkage. The assembly includes a mule sheave fixed to the yoke and a rock sheave rotatably supported on an annular sleeve. A torsion spring is spirally wound around the sleeve having one end fixed relative to the yoke and a free end rotatably biasing the rock shaft to tension the mower drive belt. The free end of the spring is received in an elongated slot in the yoke, providing a simple belt tension gage. • Patent number: 4317325
Abstract: A belt tension and timing adjustment mechanism particularly for the timing belt of a lawn mower or the like having a plurality of rotary cutting blades. One rotary blade is mounted to the mower deck by a mounting plate having a plurality of bolts. The deck includes an aperture which closely receives one of the bolts, which defines a pivot axis, and the remaining bolts are received in elongated slots for pivotal movement of the rotary blade assembly to adjust the tension in the belt. The plate is rotated on the pivot axis by an adjustment bolt assembly having a bolt received through integral tabs on the adjustment plate and deck. The plate is spring biased by a spring and spacer assembly on the bolt against the tension of the belt, wherein the correct belt tension is indicated by the space between the adjustment bolt head and the plate tab, making belt tension adjustments simple and accurate.

  • Patent number: 4231215
Abstract: A single V-belt power transmission is provided for a three-spindle rotary mower without the belt crossing over itself or being subject to severe twists. The three spindles of the mower are disposed on vertical axes to form a triangular pattern with the lead or apex angle being forwardly of the other two spindles which are spaced laterally of one another. A swingable clutch idler and a fixed axis idler engage the flat backside of the V-belt and are so positioned on the mower housing that the single V-belt has a large arc of contact with the pulley on the central lead spindle and with a drive pulley positioned forwardly of the lead spindle. The idler pulleys also serve to so position the belt that there will be no contact between runs of the belt. The invention is illustrated in an underslung mower attachment for a riding tractor and includes an automatic brake, a manually operated height adjusting mechanism and a manual control for raising the mower to a transport position.

  • Patent number: 4038880
Abstract: A belt transmission has a clutch that keeps both belts moving in the same direction when the transmission is in the forward mode and slackens only one of the belts during the usually brief interval that the transmission is placed in its reverse mode with the other belt moving in the reverse direction. Both belts share a common actuating lever having a lost motion coupling with one of the belts so that the lever can be placed in a neutral position in which neither of the belts is driven, even though power continues to be delivered to the transmission. The drive train that supplies such power accomplishes a substantially right-angle drive from the swingable tongue of the machine without a gear box by connecting a number of universal joints in a series that cuts across the corner between the swingable tongue and the main driven shaft of the transmission.
