  • Patent number: 5713189
Abstract: An interactive braking system for an electric mower is comprised of an directional control that is connected to a cam follower that, in turn, engages a brake lever. A linkage system connects the brake lever to a brake caliper assembly which is operable to engage a disc connected to an input shaft of a transaxle of a riding mower. The interactive braking system is designed to allow the operator to optimize control of the mower during slow speed operation, for example, when traversing the crown of a green or going down a hill. During these conditions, the directional control can be articulated to a slow speed position thus proportionally engaging the brake assembly. Increased braking force is realized the closer the directional control approaches the neutral position, i.e., zero throttle. The interactive braking system provides for enhanced control of the mower during slow speed operation of both forward and rearward movement of the mower.

The platform has an opening in its forward portion for the intake of grass and weeds and the exhaust of clippings. The opening also serves the functions of allowing the user to see the cutting line to determine when more should be advanced, allowing the line trimmer to be moved next to objects in a lawn for trimming weeds and grass, and allowing the line trimmer to be rotated to a horizontal orientation where edging can be performed. The wheels are preferably multidirectional so that the line trimmer can be swept across the lawn in a semi-circular pattern. • Patent number: 5233818
Abstract: A shock absorbing motor mount for heavy duty rotary cutting machines equipped with a frame and a hydraulic motor, or the like, mounted on the frame for driving a rotating cutting blade is disclosed. The shock absorbing motor mount includes a bearing for rotatably mounting the motor to the frame and a torsion arm for limiting the rotation of the motor with respect to the frame to permit an effective transfer of drive force from the motor to the cutting blade while maintaining the motor in a neutral position. The torsion arm includes a resilient shock absorber such as a compression spring mounted on one end of the torsion arm for progressively decelerating the rotation of the motor when the cutting blade strikes an object that possesses sufficient inertia to induce a rotation of the motor with respect to the frame, and returns the motor to the neutral position after the impact.

Abstract: The present invention relates to the wheel assembly of mowers, particularly to mulching mowers. In the preferred embodiment, each wheel assembly includes a clearing disc sandwiched between a pair of support wheels. The support wheels support the weight of the lawn mower. The clearing disc clears accumulated grass from the wheel assembly by moving between the support wheels as the wheels rotate to clear away grass clippings. The clearing disc has an outside diameter that is greater than the outside diameter of the support wheels and is mounted between the wheels in such a way that the clearing disc continually moves upwardly as the mower is moved.

Abstract: An improved releasable handle assembly for power driven lawn and garden devices is disclosed. The improved handle assembly includes a "handle to pivot pin" connection for releasably attaching the handle assembly to pivot pins. Coactive with the "handle to pivot pin" connection is an improved "handle to deck" latching system. The deck includes a pair of offset tower assemblies defining inclined forward and rearward handle positions. A latching mechanism is mounted to said handle assembly for telescopic movement thereon through a limited range of motion for releasably engaging said handle tower assemblies. An operator must disengage the latch mechanism from the handle tower to permit selective pivotal movement of the handle assembly to the opposite inclined position.

Abstract: A mower has blades connected to a rim which surrounds the mower's wheels. The blades may be those that cut by rotational motion or those that cut by reciprocating scissor-type motion. The wheels of the mower are able to point in any direction because each wheel of the mower is rotatable and steerable 360 degrees about the axis of the wheel's support shaft. According to an additional aspect of the invention, each of the aforementioned wheels is driven by a hydraulic motor and the direction in which the wheels are steered is controlled by a chain connecting all of the wheels through the engagement of a sprocket affixed to each wheel.
