  • Patent number: 6314707
Abstract: A reciprocating, brush cutting attachment for a vehicle such as a riding lawn mower. The attachment is in the form of a sickle head having a bottom support plate that acts as a frame for the sickle head. Two top blades reciprocate back and forth on top of the support plate, one on each side. The bottom support plate and the two top blades all include front blade edges having a plurality of teeth. As the top blades move back and forth, vegetation between the teeth is cut. The prime advantage of the sickle head of the present invention is the reduction of vibrations achieved by continuously driving the colinear top blades in opposite directions with respect to each other.

  • Patent number: 5377480
Abstract: The cutting device proposed has cutting cells (3), located side by side, which collect the items to be cut. Each cell (3) contains a stationary element, which is designed to act as a support for the items to be cut and has a stop edge for the items, and a mobile element (4) which is designed to press the items together in the cell (3). During the cutting process, the mobile element is driven so that it remains substantially parallel to the support edge, and its motion during cutting is tangential to the items being cut. This tangential cutting action enables very considerable reductions to be made in energy consumption and noise generation. The cutting device is suitable for use in grass mowers, agricultural reaping and mowing machines and hedge clippers.

  • Patent number: 4597251
Abstract: A lawnmower comprising a mower deck carried by four wheels positioned in laterally opposed pairs, with the forward wheels being adjustable for selecting mowing height. A pair of longitudinal blades are carried at the forward edge of the deck and have respective arrays of blade teeth projecting forwardly of the deck. The lower blade is affixed to the deck and the upper blade is coupled by a bell crank and a pitman drive to the output shaft of an engine for reciprocating the upper blade over the lower blade and thereby scissoring the respective blade teeth arrays. A guard shell is carried by the mower deck enclosing the mower blades and has vertical slots in the forward shell wall for receiving and combing grass to positions among the mower blade teeth. A blower is coupled to the shell for assisting such combing action and for removing clippings from the shell enclosure. The shell slots are dimensioned to prevent entry of rocks, tree trunks and human limbs.

  • Patent number: 4272948
Abstract: An oscillating knife cutting apparatus preferably for use on a row crop harvesting unit of a forage harvester to sever crop material from its standing position in a field as it is delivered into the harvester. The apparatus comprises a main support with a main pair of knives fixed thereon, a bearing fixed to said main support, a shaft rotatably mounted in said bearing, and a secondary support with a knife fixed thereto. The secondary support is mounted on said shaft for oscillatory movement therewith relative to said main support. The secondary knife is disposed between the pair of main knives and is used to sever material disposed between the secondary knife and each of the main knives. The secondary knife is adjustably mounted for movement toward the plane defined by the main knives by adjustment of a member threadably mounted longitudinally of the shaft whereby rotation of the threaded member frictionally engages a clamp mounting the secondary support on the shaft.

  • Patent number: 4107906
Abstract: The invention relates to an improvement in a reciprocating mower of the type wherein pivotal reciprocation of the cutting blades is produced by impact blows received from a rotary impactor. In accordance with this invention, two actuating levers are employed to transmit impact forces from a rotary impactor to the movable blades of the mower; one such lever moves the blades in one direction and the other lever effects the return movement of the movable blades. The rotary impactor successively contacts the two levers so that the resulting movements of the cutting blade is a movement in one direction followed by a dwell period, then a movement in the opposite direction followed by a dwell period. A fan, driven by the same prime mover as utilized to drive the rotary impactor, generates air currents which pick up and straighten the grass or other vegetation to be cut by the reciprocating blades and directs the cut vegetation through the plenum chamber of the fan and outwardly through a discharge chute.

  • Patent number: 4048791
Abstract: A lawn mower of the sickle-bar type having an elongated straight double-edged blade mounted at either end by a planetary mount producing in the horizontal plane a generally laterally reciprocating motion combined with an orbital motion creating cutting forces in both directions with the double-edged blade. The basic support wheels, handle and blade mounting and driving system are so mounted to allow one of the cutting sides or edges of the blade to be used for usual lawn mowing operation, which side is located well within and under and centrally to the basic mower structure, and the other, opposite cutting side to be used for trimming close to walls, trees, etc., which side is located at and moves past the end of the basic mower structure. The handle is reversible from one side to the other to allow the operator to move to and push from the appropriate side, depending on whether mowing or trimming operation is desired.

  • Patent number: 4044804
Abstract: A shearing device is disclosed for severing trees and the like. The device is vehicle mounted, preferably on the front of a tractor, so that forward movement of the tractor causes shearing of a tree in contact with the device. The device includes a frame member with a pair of forwardly extending spaced arms one of which has a pivot member mounted thereon, with the pivot member carrying a severing element that can be moved in an arc toward and away from the other arm of the frame member. A tree brought into contact with the severing element will be severed as the severing element is caused to move toward the other arm of the frame member due to continued forward movement of the vehicle. After a tree has been severed, the pivot member is preferably biased to automatically return to normal position near the end of the arms of the frame member with the severing element at least partially spanning the space between the arms.

  • Patent number: 3973378
Abstract: An upright cordless grass trimmer incorporated incoporates fixed multi-toothed bottom blade and plural sets of top blades which oscillate over the bottom blade to achieve cutting. The sets of top blades are driven by a motor through a gear and cam mechanism and are synchronized so that one top blade set cuts at a different time in the cycle from the other set to achieve a counterbalancing and load leveling effect. A clutch mechanism absorbs abrupt blade stoppage and shock situations and a rechargeable battery pack is releasably received by an elevated cavity in a shroud which mounts over the motor and drive mechanism. An upright handle and electrical control means are attached to the trimmer which allows the operator to operate the trimmer in an upright position.
