Rotating Cutting Disk Patents (Class 56/295)
  • Patent number: 6176015
Abstract: A vegetation cutting implement includes a rotatable support head which mounts a hub having a plurality of cutter elements comprising self-supporting struts. Each strut is more than 50% non-metallic material (typically more than 90% plastic or rubber), and the hub is readily replaceable in the vegetation cutting implement merely by detaching a fastener. Typically the cutter elements are integral with the hub, although a number of radially extending openings may be provided through which individually replaceable cutter elements pass. The self-supporting struts each preferably comprise a beam-like structure with a first axis which is the strongest axis and has a highest moment of inertia and a second, weaker axis, and the head is rotated so that the first axis of the beam-like structure of each strut is positively maintained and moves in a predetermined cutting plane which is generally transverse to a portion of vegetation to be cut.

  • Patent number: 6158129
Abstract: The present invention is a one-piece fixed line vegetation cutting head with several advantages. It is easily adaptable to virtually any vegetation trimmer and it will accommodate a variety of types and gauges of both cutting filament line and wire. The preferred embodiment has an upper portion with the shape of an inverted truncated cone which gives the head an advantage in deep vegetation by hindering the advance and entanglement of long pieces of vegetation around the vegetation trimmer's drive shaft. The preferred embodiment also has a disc-shaped lower portion with two pairs of cutting filament line passage holes in opposed positions near the circumference of the disc which are oriented at oblique angles to both the diameter and the central bore of the disc. When a discrete length of cutting filament line is inserted through the adjacent passage holes in each pair, it is subjected to less bending and wear during high speed rotation than would be experienced with the use of non-angular passage holes.

  • Patent number: 6122832
Abstract: A cutting attachment for use with a vegetation cutting device. The cutting attachment has a body with a generally planar coupling portion and a central axis of rotation. In one embodiment, the body further includes a conical central wall portion extending radially outwardly and in a first direction from the coupling portion and the axis and a circular outer wall portion adjoining the central wall portion and extending generally radially outwardly therefrom. The central wall portion defines a conically-shaped self-cleaning inner cavity disposed symmetrically about the axis. The outer wall portion has a generally smooth outer surface which serves as a skid plate. An outer self-cleaning cavity is formed by an outer surface of the central wall portion and an inner surface of the outer wall portion. A coupling assembly, which can include an adapter having first and second clamping elements, is carried by the coupling portion for coupling the body to the cutting device to cause rotation about the axis.

The cutting assembly comprises a cutting filament consisting of a stainless steel filament coated with a polymeric elastomer, steel tube-type collar stops, and allen head set screws. The cutting performance and capabilities of commercially available vegetation trimmers can be substantially improved by replacing their cutting assembly with the instant cutting assembly. The cutting filament does not have a point of attachment within the rotating housing hub located on the bottom of the trimmer, thereby enabling the cutting filament to better follow the rotation of the hub, and thereby improve the overall cutting ability of the trimmer.

  • Patent number: 6062013
Abstract: A mobile implement for mulching which provides complete control of the mulching process and uniformly distributes the mulch back upon the lawn. Grass and leaves are cut using a standard cutting blade. The mass of cut vegetation is then lifted upward into a hammermill by the trailing edge of the rotating cutting blade. The air stream generated by the rotating hammers of the hammermill forces the vegetation against a shear screen. Repeated blows by the hammers chop the vegetation to a controlled size and force it through the screen. A portion of the chopped mulch falls back upon the ground in the area of the trailing quadrant of the implement's path. The remainder of the mulch is forced into the discharge duct and blown uniformly out onto the lawn through the discharge opening of the mower housing. This same system of hardware may be incorporated into either a hand push or a power driven rotary mower as well as a gang unit, mounted on or pulled by a tractor.

The blade shape of this invention, presents a cutting edge including a series of adjacent parallel recesses transversely to the cutting edge on the top of the blade. This gives equidistant thin and complete material. A differentiation is made on the cutting edge between the protective material (full thickness) and sharp edges (recesses). Experience has shown that, on the encountering of an obstacle, the cutting edge (thin Material) is protected by the full material to its left and right which results in a long useful life with relatively constant cutting efficiency.

  • Patent number: 5832704
Abstract: A blade assembly is provided for a lawn mower which includes first and second fan blades to maintain the interior of the blade housing free of accumulated grass clippings as occur when mowing damp or wet grass. The blade assembly includes a conventional grass cutting blade and two axially spaced and radially displaced fan blades which are affixed to the engine shaft, above the cutting blade. The fan blades create sufficient turbulence within the housing to prevent grass accumulation, thereby improving the ability and efficiency of the mower.

  • Patent number: 5809765
Abstract: A mulching mower is provided for mowing and mulching turf vegetation in order to reduce the size of the cut vegetation and more evenly distribute the vegetation once thus cut. Counterrotating, coaxial mowing blade and mulching tool assemblies are provided. The mowing blade assembly is driven by a central shaft rotatably mounted through a drive barrel which drives the mulching tool. The mulching tool assembly includes a plurality of blades, typically pivotally mounted, at least one of the mulching blades being in a lower mulching plane, and at least one other of the mulching blades being in an upper mulching plane.

  • Patent number: 5791131
Abstract: One or more replaceable cutting blade tips and a central mounting bar comprise a blade assembly. Each of the replaceable cutting blade tips can be selectively attached to the central mounting bar without the use of tools. During typical operation, the replaceable cutting blade tips snugly fit relative to the central mounting bar and little, if any, relative pivoting therebetween is evident. However, some relative pivoting can occur when exceptional loads are encountered by the replaceable cutting blade tips such as when an obstacle such as a rock is encountered. In such an instance, a tearable "zipper" is provided which allows the blade tip to "tear" its way through the zipper while pivoting, thus advantageously providing a means for dissipating energy. Also provided is a "family of bars" concept which reduces inventory, reduces tooling expenses, and facilitates efficient and correspondingly low cost blade tips due to the volumes possible.

As the disc is rotated the filaments are adapted for cutting grass and the like. Projections extending from the disc create an air turbulence that both lifts the vegetation to be cut and swirls the clippings to further mulch the clippings.

Abstract: A rotary blade for a rotary mower that provides an equivalent cut with a substantial reduction in necessary driving power, and a method of implementing the same to reduce the necessary driving power of a preexisting mower. The rotary blade includes a support arm fixedly disposed symmetrically about a rotary drive shaft, at a height sufficient to avoid contact with vegetation cut by the blade, such that the rotary drive shaft rotates the support arm about an axis. The rotary blade also includes several cutting elements attached to the support arm which have respective longitudinal axes that project downward from the support arm to a predetermined distance such that the cutting elements are positioned to avoid contact with the ground.
