Rotating On Vertical Axis Patents (Class 56/503)
  • Patent number: 4083166
Abstract: A mulcher attachment for use with a rotary mower for shredding and mulching the clippings produced during operation of the mower. The mulcher attachment comprises a circular disc mounted on the drive shaft of the rotary mower for rotation alongside the mower blade. A plurality of relatively large openings are provided at spaced locations around the disc with an upwardly extending impeller blade adjacent each of the openings and serving for inducing a flow of air upwardly through the openings as the disc rotates while drawing clippings, leaves and other waste therewith. A series of shredder blades are integrally formed along the peripheral edge of the disc and have cutting edges extending above the upper surface of the disc adapted for shredding and mulching the clippings, leaves and other waste as these materials are cast centrifugally outwardly during rotation of the disc.

  • Patent number: 4069649
Abstract: A grass and leaf collector and compactor attachment for lawn mowers consisting of a chute adapted to be mounted at the side of a mower hood to receive mower cuttings ejected from the hood in the lower end thereof, and chute angling upwardly into a hopper also adapted to be mounted on the mower, and one or more paddle bars extending generally longitudinally through the chute and having paddles secured transversely thereto at intervals along their lengths. The paddle bars are driven in vertical orbital paths by suitable connection to a ground-engaging drive wheel of the mower, so as to impel cuttings received in the lower end of the chute upwardly through the chute into the hopper. The hopper is at a sufficient elevation above ground level that its contents may be dumped by dropping the floor thereof.

  • Patent number: 4057952
Abstract: A rotary lawn mower includes apparatus for chopping and shredding materials such as cuttings, etc. into a mulch and collecting the mulch in a storage facility attached to the mower's housing. The device includes three blades affixed to the same vertically oriented drive shaft, vertically spaced from one another and rotationally staggered. An uppermost blade chops articles as they are fed into the mower's housing from a hopper thereabove, and the blade below shreds the chopped articles by engaging them against pairs of opposed shredder bars between which the shredder blade passes. Following this, the shredded material is passed out of a side opening in the housing into the collecting container by the centrifugal action of the chopping and shredding blades and by a fan effect of a mower blade, which is lowermost on the drive shaft. A bottom plate may be secured over the opening at the bottom of the apparatus when it is to be used for chopping and shredding.

  • Patent number: 3984966
Abstract: There is provided a rotary corn stalk cutter for use as an attachment on a combine type of harvesting machine which is equipped with a vertically inclined corn head and platform. The cutter includes a housing which is dependingly attached to the bottom of the platform in the open space between two successive row divider points. A telescopic linkage is provided for adjusting the attitude of the cutter housing in order to maintain the knives of the cutter in parallel relationship with the ground regardless of the angular position of the corn head and platform. A ledger blade in combination with the cutter knives is provided for comminutating the cut stalks and an opening is provided in the housing for discharging the chopped material rearwardly of the direction of travel of the combine.

  • Patent number: 3945177
Abstract: A method of cutting sugar cane comprising the steps of passing in one direction through the growing cane a vehicle having mounted thereon two upwardly extending power driven combing elements spaced apart across the width of the vehicle; combing a narrow stretch of cane between the combing elements; flattening the cane beneath a flattening element mounted on the vehicle to the rear of the combing elements and spaced above the ground to extend transversely to the one direction; and severing the cane at its base by power driven rotating ground-following cutting means mounted on the vehicle to the rear of the flattening element.

  • Patent number: 3931859
Abstract: An agricultural implement is convertible from a soil tilling cultivator having a row of detachable soil working members having rotatable supports by removing some or all of the soil working tools and attaching mowing or cutting tools having one or more horizontally extending blades, to only some of the rotatable supports, at spaced apart intervals along the row. The bladed tools have detachable carriers and each of the tools has at least one group of blades with leading edges that are rotated in circular paths which overlap the paths of those blades on adjacent tools. The rotary tools can have spaced apart groups of blades at different vertical levels and guide surfaces or further cutting or mowing elements mounted between adjacent tools. Also, the bladed tools can be fastened to alternate supports or every third support to rotate in the same or opposite directions from adjacent bladed tools.
