  • Patent number: 6131377
Abstract: A deep groove ground-contacting roller for a reel type mower assembly having a plurality of interfitting intermediate roller segments and matching end segments mounted on a transverse bearing mounted axle rod in tight abutment. Stop rings engage the end segments and the axle rod to fix the roller segments on the rod to form a roller body. Each roller segment includes a cylindrical hub and a disc element extending radially therefrom with converging planar annular side surfaces intersecting to form a rounded ground-contacting ridge. The disc elements and the hub sections combine to form a deep groove with angled side surfaces and a right circular cylindrical bottom.

  • Patent number: 6094897
Abstract: A zero turning radius power lawn mower for operation by a standing occupant includes first and second independently driven and controlled rear drive wheels mounted on separate drive axles. A riding platform for supporting the standing occupant or operator is located between the first and second rear drive wheels. The rear drive wheels are independently driveable in both the forward and reverse directions at variable speeds so as to allow for substantially zero radius turning of the mower about a central turning point. The riding platform is positioned near this turning point or axis so that the standing occupant remains substantially unaffected by centrifugal force created during approximate zero radius turning of the mower thereby allowing the mower to take such turns at higher speeds. The low center of gravity created by the position of the riding platform for the standing operator also results in the mower having improved traction and being less likely to pop "wheelies" upon acceleration.

  • Patent number: 6065276
Abstract: A mulching mower deck within which first and second mower blades rotate for cutting grass, having first and second blade chambers positioned adjacent each other and within which respective blades rotate during operation. The first and second blade chambers are generally completely enclosed for generally confining grass clippings within the blade chambers for preventing the clippings from exiting through side or top walls of the mower deck. The first and second blades travel in respective paths which overlap. The first blade is positioned to the right of the second blade with respect to forward operation of the mower deck and travels in a clockwise direction, and the second blade is positioned to the left of the first blade and travels in a counterclockwise direction. An opening is formed between the first and second blade chambers at a location where the blade paths overlap. Edges of the opening are positioned relatively close to the first and second blades near where the blade paths overlap.

  • Patent number: 6062013
Abstract: A mobile implement for mulching which provides complete control of the mulching process and uniformly distributes the mulch back upon the lawn. Grass and leaves are cut using a standard cutting blade. The mass of cut vegetation is then lifted upward into a hammermill by the trailing edge of the rotating cutting blade. The air stream generated by the rotating hammers of the hammermill forces the vegetation against a shear screen. Repeated blows by the hammers chop the vegetation to a controlled size and force it through the screen. A portion of the chopped mulch falls back upon the ground in the area of the trailing quadrant of the implement's path. The remainder of the mulch is forced into the discharge duct and blown uniformly out onto the lawn through the discharge opening of the mower housing. This same system of hardware may be incorporated into either a hand push or a power driven rotary mower as well as a gang unit, mounted on or pulled by a tractor.

Abstract: A rotary blade for a rotary mower that provides an equivalent cut with a substantial reduction in necessary driving power, and a method of implementing the same to reduce the necessary driving power of a preexisting mower. The rotary blade includes a support arm fixedly disposed symmetrically about a rotary drive shaft, at a height sufficient to avoid contact with vegetation cut by the blade, such that the rotary drive shaft rotates the support arm about an axis. The rotary blade also includes several cutting elements attached to the support arm which have respective longitudinal axes that project downward from the support arm to a predetermined distance such that the cutting elements are positioned to avoid contact with the ground.

Abstract: A rotary cutter includes first and second pairs of blades pivotally mounted to opposite ends of a first blade holder, with the first pair of blades being spaced vertically above the second pair of blades. A third pair of blades for enhancing the shredding characteristic of the cutter are mounted to the opposite ends of a second blade holder having a longitudinal axis disposed perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the first blade holder. The third pair of blades are located to operate at a height in between the respective heights of operation of the first and second blades and are located to trace a path which is radially inward from that traced by the first and second blades. • Patent number: 5661959
Abstract: The improvement of the present invention comprises an elongated scraper which has a scraper surface that is disposed along substantially the entire length of the most rearwardly disposed roller supporting the mower structure. Such elongated scraper is disposed for stripping accumulated grass and debris from the most rearwardly disposed roller surface as such rearward roller rotates rearwardly during a mowing operation. In preferred embodiments, the elongated scraper is supported by respective pivot arms which are pivotedly carried upon the scraper support frame and are urged downwardly by means of a coil spring, in order to dispose the scraper surface into a stripping proximity vis-a-vis the rear surface of the rearwardly disposed roller, to remove accumulated grass debris therefrom, and thereby control the depth of cut of the grass comprising the green surface.

Pivot pins attach two or more steel blades to the hub within a circumferential groove. The groove extends from the outside edge of the hub towards the center of the hub. The upper and lower portions of the hub above and below the groove support the blades vertically. The blades are free to pivot in a horizontal plane when they strike an object. The groove depth is at least one half of the blade width to provide vertical support. The blades are at least one half of the hub diameter. • Patent number: 5600943
Abstract: A mower suitable for cutting high grass, brush, and like growth. The mower has a plurality primary cutting elements disposed ahead of a secondary cutting element. The primary cutting elements is that which first contacts growth, cutting this growth to a predetermined height. The secondary cutting element follows the primary cutting element, contacting the cut growth and cutting the same to a final, predetermined height less than that obtained by the first cut. The primary cutting elements are preferably unencumbered by a hood or guard, but preferably are partially encircled or surrounded at the front and sides by a bumper. The bumper prevents the mower from attempting to run over or cut rigid, immovable objects, such as trees, curbs, large stones, and the like. The primary and secondary cutting elements may be a singular element or plural elements arranged abreast of one another. The cutting elements may be rigid blades or flexible members, such as stranded metal, synthetic resin cords, or chains.

  • Patent number: 5561972
Abstract: A blade assembly for a lawn mower has a generally planar body (1) rotationally balanced about a vertical central shaft (24), with four projecting blades (6) extending radially from the periphery of the planar body. The planar body (1) is shaped with vanes (3) to form a fan-like impeller. The impeller is arranged to create a strong rotational flow, which carries air and cut material around the blade assembly in use. The projecting blades (6) create an updraft in a peripheral region of the blade assembly, while the vanes (3) of the planar body (1) are shaped to create a regulated, relatively light downdraft towards the central shaft (24). If the mower is provided with an outlet (25) for a catcher, the strong rotational flow overwhelms any influence of the relatively light downdraft, and the air with the clippings is carried centrifugally through the outlet (25).
