Abstract: A process is disclosed for preparing 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene comprising allylic rearrangement of 2,3,3,3-tetrachloropropene using a substantially anhydrous ferric chloride catalyst. Alternatively, 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene is prepared by dehydrochlorination of 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane using a ferric chloride catalyst. Process schemes commencing with the preparation of the precursor 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane by reaction of ethylene with carbon tetrachloride are also disclosed.
Abstract: In the reaction of carbon tetrachloride with ethylene in the presence of a catalyst comprising a phosphite ester and an iron-containing material to produce 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane, the improvement which comprises employing powdered iron as the iron-containing material. Thereby the carbon tetrachloride is converted in large amount and with high selectivity to the desired product. The reaction proceeds well even under milder conditions than with the catalysts of the prior art.

The process can be used to produce low molecular weight vinyl chloride polymers.

Abstract: An ethylenic hydrocarbon is reacted with carbon tetrachloride in the presence of an alkyl phosphite, an iron chloride and a nitrile compound. According to this process, tetrachloroalkanes having more than two carbon atoms can be obtained in high yields.
