Abstract: An illumination element such as an optical waveguide for illuminating a surgical field in a patient has a light input section, a light transmitting section, and a light output section. The light input section is optically coupled to a proximal section of the light transmitting section and inputs light into the illumination element. The light transmitting section transmits the light preferably by total internal reflection or by other transmission means. The light output section is adjacent a distal section of the light transmitting section which has a light extraction area from which the light exits with an energy density. The light extraction area is large enough to maintain the energy density at a level that prevents melting of the illumination element or burning of the patient, and the light extraction area has a profile that does not interfere with access to the surgical field.

  • Patent number: 8961411
Abstract: The object is to seek a position for an insertion opening through which a treatment tool inserted inside a body cavity may reach an affected area while avoiding an obstacle. A first light emitting portion placed in an insertion portion applies light to an affected area inside a body cavity. A second light emitting portion placed in the insertion portion applies light to an inner wall of the body cavity toward the opposite side of the first light emitting portion. At this time, a light pathway on which the light from the first light emitting portion and the second light emitting portion will not strike the obstacle (e.g., an organ outside than the affected area, etc.) inside the body cavity is searched for. By making, in the position that the light from the second light emitting portion strikes, an insertion opening for inserting a treatment tool, the treatment tool can reach the affected area without interfering with the obstacle.

Abstract: A medical mouthpiece may include a U-shaped first member having a tubular portion, the first member forming at least one lateral interocclusal passageway extending through the first member, and a second member received within the tubular portion. A medical breathing apparatus may include a U-shaped first member forming left and right lateral interocclusal passageways extending through the first member, a second member attached to the first member, and an adapter receivable within a tubular portion of the first member, wherein the adapter includes a respiratory orifice configured to deliver respiratory gas to the left and right lateral interocclusal passageways. A method for delivering positive pressure and/or a respiratory gas to a patient may include inserting a mouthpiece into a mouth of the patient, and delivering the positive pressure and/or the respiratory gas through the mouthpiece to a space adjacent a posterior oropharynx of the patient.

Abstract: A compact light source includes an LED for supplying light and an optical element that receives and transmits the light. The LED is disposed in an insulation housing to insulate the LED, which has a surface that conducts the heat it generates. A heat sink is coupled to the LED adjacent the conductive surface, and a thermal compound is sandwiched in between the heat sink and conductive surface in order to channel and dissipate the heat generated by the LED without heating up any surrounding structures. In some embodiments, the optical element is part of a collimator coupled to the insulation housing and is a doublet or plano convex lens.

Abstract: A medical-use light-source apparatus includes a light source lamp, a connector to which a body cavity endoscope and an ophthalmic observation apparatus can be selectively connected, a determiner which determines whether the body cavity endoscope or the ophthalmic observation apparatus is currently connected to the connector, and a lamp controller which sets a value of a maximum light amount of the illumination light to a first threshold value when the determiner determines that the body cavity endoscope is currently connected to the connector, and sets a value of a maximum light amount of the illumination light to a second threshold value that is smaller than the first threshold value when the determiner determines that the ophthalmic observation apparatus is currently connected to the connector.

Abstract: Hair or partial hair removal system and hair growth deterrent that includes mechanical process for cutting, plucking or shaving hair follicles, along with pre and/or post skin treatment techniques. The skin treatment techniques can include the application of energy to the skin surface before, after and/or during the application of the mechanical process. Such techniques include the application of heat and/or energy from illumination sources and/or RF emitters. Further skin treatment techniques include the application of solutions before, after and/or during the mechanical process and/or the application of heat and/or energy. Overall, the system operates to treat an area of skin to facilitate the removal of all or a portion of hair, retard further growth, and recovery of skin surface.

Abstract: A laparoscopic instrument for forming an incision in a body cavity, insufflating the body cavity with gas, and suturing the incision at the completion of the surgery includes a set of jaws at the distal end of the Veress needle or cannula. The jaws are pivoted to one another for motion between an open position or a closed position in which they may be used to grasp a suture in the body cavity for removal from the cavity for knotting. A push mechanism at the proximal end of the instrument moves the jaws between their open and closed position on successive actuations of a pushbutton and retains them in that state until the next push. An illumination source is provided for the distal end of the instrument to provide illumination through the walls of the body cavity so that the surgeon can determine the degree of penetration of the instrument into the body cavity and can identify any major arteries which should be avoided in the formation of other laparoscopic openings.

Abstract: A surgical instrument for illuminating a surgical field has an optical waveguide for transmitting light by total internal reflection. One or more control elements are disposed on the optical waveguide. The control elements extract light from the optical waveguide and control first and second optical properties of the extracted light. Another surgical instrument includes a first and second optical waveguide for transmitting light by total internal reflection. A coupling element is attached to both optical waveguides such that the optical waveguides are movable and pivotable relative to one another.
