Distal Portion Of Inserting Means Deformed, Expanded, Or Ruptured To Permit Passage Of Insert Therefrom Patents (Class 604/14)
  • Publication number: 20110066099
Abstract: A method and device are disclosed for delivering items into the body of a subject. The device is elongated, and includes a flexible diaphragm having a proximal face and a distal face. The diaphragm is inverted into the device to form a receptacle that holds an item to be delivered. Fluid pressure is applied against the proximal face of the flexible diaphragm to deliver the item from the receptacle and out of the delivery device into the body. In one embodiment, the device is a one-piece device having compressible walls. The diaphragm, which may be a portion of the chamber wall, invaginates within the chamber to form the receptacle. Compression of the flexible walls of the device increases pressure on a proximal face of the diaphragm to evaginate the diaphragm out of the chamber and deliver an item contained in the chamber.

Abstract: There is provided a multiple-component tampon applicator formed from at least three separate components. A fingergrip having a reduced cross-section as compared to that of the barrel may be formed such that it is a separate component or is integrally formed with a barrel component. The reduced cross-section fingergrip provides exceptional grippability to the user. The multiple components may be formed from materials including, for example, biopolymer including starches and proteins, cardboard, heat shrink plastic, paper slurry, plastic, plastic tubing, pulp slurry, pulp-molded paper, or any combinations thereof. Prior to assembly of the applicator and prior to loading the barrel component with an absorbent pledget, petals may be formed on the insertion end of the barrel using existing processes and equipment. Alternatively, a separate insertion tip component having petals may be formed.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to an ergonomically improved tampon applicator having a plunger and a barrel. The barrel has four distinct sections, namely a finger grip section, a reverse taper section, a main body section, and an insertion tip section. The reverse taper section is tapered towards the fingergrip section and the main body section is tapered in an opposite direction towards the insertion tip section. A maximum diameter is formed where the reverse taper section and main body section meet on the barrel. The maximum diameter provides a sensory means to the user to alert the user when the applicator has been inserted at the proper depth in the vagina.

The tubular insertion member containing a cage having an inner surface, an outer surface, a plurality of arms extending from an inner end portion toward the insertion end of the tubular insertion member, and a second stop affixed the outer surface proximate the inner end of the cage. The object is held within the cage until placement into the user's body and the first and second stops are capable of engaging to allow the object to be delivered into the body cavity while the cage remains constrained within the insertion member.

Abstract: A lubricated tampon applicator having a sanitary wrapper. The applicator comprises a tubular body having a lubrication cell near its insertion end. The lubrication cell is scored to preferentially fail first at the interior cell membrane, and then the exterior cell membrane as the tampon is expelled from the applicator. The tampon has a lesser circumference about the leading portion than the trailing portion, thereof. In another embodiment the cell is a cage having a scored inner membrane and a leading surface of discrete petals. The cage is covered by an elastic membrane which is turned inward at the central axis and extends through an opening formed by the petals, flares radially outward, and seals against the inner membrane. The sanitary wrapper contains a portion for maintaining the applicator tip coated with lubricant. An adhesive bonds the wrapper to the applicator, effectively containing the lubricant.

Abstract: The present invention relates to applicators for inserting objects into body cavities, and to methods for making the same. The applicators are particularly useful for inserting catamenial and prophylactic devices into a vaginal canal. The applicators comprise a tubular insertion member and a retrofitted gripping member. The gripping member has an outer diameter greater than that of the insertion member. An interface is created due to this size differential, which provides a visual or tactile cue of applicator insertion depth, and thereafter object positioning within the body cavity. The gripping member comprises at least one raised area on its outwardly disposed surface, providing resistance to movement of the user's manual digit in response to longitudinal forces on the insertion member.

Abstract: In a method and apparatus for delivering a composition to a targeted area of tissue, exposure of a non-targeted tissue to the composition is minimized. The apparatus has at least one needle-like shaft which is inserted through a track in the non-targeted tissue to deliver the composition to the targeted tissue through an opening in the shaft. The track may be a naturally occurring lumen in a tissue, such as a vascular lumen, or may be a track created surgically by a diagnostic instrument, or by the needle-like shaft of the present apparatus. A valve-like mechanism closes the opening in the shaft to prevent premature delivery of the composition during insertion of the shaft, and to prevent loss of composition during withdrawal of the shaft. The valve-like mechanism also prevents excessive delivery of the composition to targeted tissue. An annular dam is mounted on an exterior portion of the shaft near the opening.

There is also provided a unique polymeric tampon applicator that is soft and flexible. When used as a tampon applicator barrel, the barrel is more comfortable and has improved ease of insertion. The polymeric compound primarily comprises a thermoplastic resin and a block copolymer that exhibit unique load, energy and modulus of elasticity properties. The polymeric compound should also include a plasticizer and a compatibilizer/flow modifier, and may include a slip/mold release agent, an antioxidant, and even a pigment. There is also provided a method for making the polymeric compound that will be formed into a product, such as an applicator or applicator barrel in which all of the above ingredients, except for the thermoplastic resin, are combined and formed into soft pellets. The soft resin pellets are then dry blended with pellets of the thermoplastic resin.

The applicator has an applicator element with a leading end and a trailing end. The bag-like tampon is placed over the leading end of the applicator when the tampon is in a flaccid initial configuration which defines an initial width, and the applicator is used to spread the tampon to a greater deployed width. In one embodiment, the applicator comprises tube having an interior and a flexible material which has one end that is formed into a flexible and expandable loop. The flexible loop is slidably mounted within the tube. The flexible loop is contained inside the tube until it is desired to deploy the tampon.

  • Patent number: 6056714
Abstract: There is provided a supporting rim structure of an open-ended tampon applicator for firmly supporting a tampon pledget that has been assembled in the applicator. The applicator supports the pledget around an intermediate section between its insertion end and its rear portion so that the insertion end is exposed outside of the applicator and the rear portion is inside of the applicator. In particular, the rim structure firmly supports the pledget against an axial force subjected to the pledget by a forming tool that forms the insertion end of the pledget into a rounded, hemispherical shape and yet readily allows the pledget to eject from the applicator. The rim structure has a shape that tapers angularly inward from the body of the applicator to form a rigid brace that counters the axial force subjected by the forming tool. Thus, while preventing the insertion end of the pledget from receding back into the applicator, the rim structure allows the pledget to easily eject from the applicator.
