    Abstract: An ultrasonic lipectomy probe device comprises, in accordance with the present invention, a shank having a proximal end and a distal end, a connector at the proximal end of the shank for connecting the shank to a source of ultrasonic vibrational energy, and an enlarged head at the distal end of the shank. The probe head has a width, in a first direction, substantially larger than an outer diameter of the shank at the distal end thereof. In addition, the head has a thickness, in a second direction essentially orthogonal with respect to the first direction, substantially equal to the outer diameter of the shank. Accordingly, the probe head is flattened, for facilitating the removal of fat in accordance with the present invention. In most applications, the shank is provided with a longitudinally extending channel, while the head may be provided with a pair of inlet bores communicating with the channel and extending at substantial angles to the channel on substantially opposite sides thereof.

    Abstract: An ultrasonic surgical liposuction apparatus comprises a piezoelectric crystal transducer assembly is connectable to an interchangeable operative probe and tip. The probe can be hollow, if aspiration of the fatty tissue is desired, or it can be solid. The tip is largely formed of a plastic material, to prevent the propagation of the ultrasonic waves to the distal end of the apparatus. Prevention of propagation of the ultrasonic energy to the distal end prevents unwanted damage of the tissues by an excessively hot tip. The tip can be removable or permanently affixed by a weld. The tip can have a metal jacket covering the lateral surfaces of the plastic tip body, to assist penetration of the fatty tissue, or the tip can be entirely made of plastic. The tip can also have an opening or series of openings for aspiration of the fatty tissue.

    Abstract: An infant meconium aspirating and ventilating apparatus comprising a flexible one-piece transparent aspirating device, a tube for connecting the aspirating device to a vacuum source, a ventilating device; and a clamp for shutting off and admitting vacuum into the suctioning device. The one-piece aspirating device, which is a primary feature of the present invention, is formed from the same piece of flexible, transparent, non-irritating plastic material, such as polyethylene. The aspirating device has an endotracheal tube end portion, an intermediate body portion, an outlet tube end portion and a port. The length of the endotracheal tube portion is preferably fixed at 13 cm. The length of the outlet tube is preferably about 35 to 50 cm. to prevent the weight and stiffness of the tube from the wall suction device from adversely affecting the maneuverability of the aspirating device. The port is used for regulating vacuum, administering medication and attaching the ventilating device.

    Abstract: An ultrasonic surgical handpiece for surgery on a patient has a handpiece with distal and proximal ends on a housing thereof for manipulation by a surgeon. A vibrator is carried within a hollow inside of the housing. A tool extends from the vibrator at the distal end to a distal tip and is tubular with a bore along its axis so axial vibrations at high frequency are transmitted to the distal tip. Fluid flows from the distal tip to the vibrator, cools the vibrator and connects to a source of suction at the proximal end. A flue carried cantilever on the distal end extends about the tool so a space is between the tool and the flue for guiding fluid from the distal end to the distal tip. A port located through the tool connects between the space and the bore and is axially positioned near the distal end to collect fluid. An inlet on the flue is near the distal end for fluid provided by a supply. The inlet is axial distal of the port and/or may meter fluid to a preset range.

    Abstract: A surgical technique in which a tumescent solution of local anaesthetic and a vasoconstrictor in injected into the site via a cannula. Using the same cannula, the surgeon aspirates fat and tissue from the site, depositing the aspirated fat and tissue into the reservoir/bottle from which the tumescent solution was first withdrawn. Preferably, both the injection and the aspiration is accomplished with the assist of a single peristaltic pump. By reversing the headstock of the peristaltic pump, and modulating the speed of rotation, the peristaltic pump both injects and aspirates the site. The aspirated fat and tissue is kept in a closed cycle so that contamination is minimized and exposure to the air by the fat is prevented; thereby permitting the aspirated fat to be used elsewhere for body contouring.

    Abstract: An improved medical tool which combines tumescent anesthetic solution with lipoplastic. Using a peristaltic pump and a cannula, the surgeon directs the tumescent solution into the area of concern. The tumescent solution provides both a local anesthetic as well as a vasoconstrictor. The solution eliminates the need for a general anesthetic, thus eliminating problems associated therewith, and the solution causes the blood vessels to constrict, reducing the amount of blood loss during the procedure. Once the solution has had an opportunity to perform its function, the surgeon reverses the direction of the peristaltic pump and removes the fat and tissue through the same cannula used for the tumescent portion of the operation. Since the suction process is performed by the peristaltic pump (as opposed to manually by the surgeon), the cannula is reduced in size to a highly versatile and tactile instrument providing highly improved results.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed to a new and useful apparatus and method for absorbing and collecting blood and other fluids which accumulate in a patient during surgical procedures. An absorbent portion is connected to a suction source. When the absorbent portion is placed in contact with the fluid to be collected, the fluid is absorbed by the absorbent portion. Operation of the suction source provides a vacuum which draws the fluid away from the absorbent portion and out of the body. The fluid can be drawn into a receptacle for later cleansing and reuse. A flexible backing plate is attached to the absorbent portion. Channels formed a long the backing plate direct the vacuum evenly across the absorbent portion of the device such that fluid is drawn evenly from the absorbent portion. Suction tubing connects the absorbent portion to the suction source. The absorbent portion and attached backing plate can be folded to fit into small areas.

    Abstract: A medico-surgical suction system has a container with an outlet connected to a vacuum pump and an inlet connected to a suction catheter via a dual-lumen tube assembly one end of which is connected to the container and the other end of which is has a suction control and a coupling for the catheter. A valve located in the outlet of the container is connected to the suction control via a minor lumen of the tube. A side lumen enables the vacuum pump to apply reduced pressure to one end of the valve which holds the valve off against the action of a spring. Actuation of the suction control allows air to flow to the valve via the minor lumen so that the effect of the reduced pressure is overcome and the spring opens the valve.

    Abstract: Recovery of blood from a wound site (12) during a surgical procedure is accomplished with low blood trauma that enables collection of increased amounts of blood having relatively little structural damage for return to the surgical patient. Blood trauma is decreased by accelerating liquid blood from the wound site to flow at a relatively low velocity with a relatively high negative gauge pressure and accelerating a mixture of blood and foam from the wound site to flow at a relatively high velocity and a relatively low negative gauge pressure. A suction wand is provided in which liquid blood (32) is separated from a mixture of blood and foam (16) at the wound site through the transport of the two separated fluids at the different velocities and negative gauge pressures. The wand includes an outer blood foam tube within which are three resiliently compressed, side-by-side tubes for handling liquid blood, rinse solution and anticoagulant.

An auxiliary nozzle may be attached to the exposed, distal end of the inner tube for passage through a trocar cannula or the like during endoscopic procedures.     Abstract: A suction control valve is disclosed that vents to atmosphere the residual vacuum pressure presented to a suction catheter or similar device when the central bore of the valve is completely blocked by a valve member and the device that the suction control valve is controlling becomes occluded. A vent bore extends from the central bore through the valve body underneath the valve member. A vent channel is formed in the underside of the valve member longitudinally aligned with the vent bore and extending a small distance along the underside of the valve body from the end of the valve body. The length of the vent channel is such that when the valve member completely blocks the central bore, the vent channel is positioned over the vent bore thereby forming a vent path from the central bore through the vent bore and vent channel to the atmosphere. Unless the valve body is in the fully closed position, the vent bore is not aligned with the vent channel.

Structure is provided for refluxing material in the tip back into the eye as desired by the user. Alternatively, fluid may be delivered through the handpiece and tip to the surgical site if needed.

    Abstract: An improvement over the Foley catheter which provides, in addition to the main drainage lumen, a central smaller lumen for continuous delivery of a small quantity of sterile irrigating solution directly through the distal tip into the bladder. A larger portion of the irrigating solution is deflected by the cone shaped roof of the distal tip and turned backward past the drainage ports and into the drainage lumen. This backward flow of liquid causes a mild suction which assists the removal of clots and tissue debris from the bladder. The continuous flow of sterile solution also cleanses the drainage lumen and prevents the upward movement of bacteria common in most urinary catheters. A suction syringe can also be used in the usual manner in the event of a blockage. A second embodiment of the invention provides two protuberances across from the drainage ports within the distal tip to assist in breaking up clots as they enter the drainage lumen.

In the method of the invention, the distal end of the tissue-sculpting tube is moved through fatty tissue so as to cut the fatty tissue with the knife edge, and direct the cut fatty tissue into the tube, thereby removing the cut fatty tissue from the animal's body.

    Abstract: A suction and irrigation apparatus is provided for selectively delivering suction or irrigation fluid to a patient during surgery or the like. A pair of resilient tubes are provided which is connected with a suction source and irrigation source at one end and is connected through a Y-shaped connector at the other end with a handpiece having clamping valves thereon disposed between the ends of the resilient tubes. The handpiece has a housing with openings in the ends thereof to provide passageways for the resilient tubes. Clamping valves are mounted in the housing which are spring urged to close the resilient tubes. A bracket is slidably mounted on the sides of the handpiece housing and the bracket is slidable to a position overlying the clamping valves so as to maintain the clamping valves in an open position. When the clamping valves are held in an opened position by the bracket, the handpiece can be moved along the length of the resilient tubes to position the handpiece at any desired location.
