  • Patent number: 9265556
Abstract: Thermally adjustable surgical tools include a conductor and a ferromagnetic material. The ferromagnetic material may be quickly heated when subjected to high frequency alternating current through the conductor. The ferromagnetic material may also cool rapidly because of its relatively low mass and the small thermal mass of the conductor. The thermally adjustable surgical tools may be used to sculpt, melt, break and/or remove biological material. The thermally adjustable surgical tools may also include balloon catheters which can heat fluid to thereby treat biological material.

  • Patent number: 9144454
Abstract: A bipolar electrosurgical colpotomy device includes a colpotomy cup and a tissue containment bag. The colpotomy cup includes a first electrode located adjacent to a rim of the cup, the rim being configured to contact an internal surface of a patient's cervico-vaginal junction. The tissue containment bag includes an opening and a second electrode located adjacent to the opening. The tissue containment bag is configured to surround the patient's uterus and the opening is configured to fit over an external surface of the patient's cervico-vaginal junction. Applying a voltage potential between the first and second electrodes vaporizes tissue at the patient's cervico-vaginal junction by electrosurgical energy passing through the tissue disposed between the first and second electrodes. The tissue containment bag then can be used to remove the uterus from the patient, possibly after masticating the uterus within the bag.

Abstract: The present embodiments provide apparatus and methods for treating tissue by applying a force to the tissue. In one embodiment, the apparatus comprises a deployable segment having proximal and distal regions, a main body extending therebetween, and a loop member formed at the distal region of the deployable segment. A cannula having a bore is dimensioned to circumferentially surround at least a portion of the main body at a location proximal to the loop member, and a spring member is disposed between the cannula and the loop member. The proximal end of the spring member is affixed to the cannula, and the distal end of the spring member is movable to apply a compressive force to adjust the size of the opening of the loop member and compress tissue disposed within the opening of the loop member. In an alternative embodiment, the cannula is omitted, and a diameter of the loop member is configured to be reduced and increased any number of times before final deployment of the deployable segment.

  • Patent number: 9101383
Abstract: A medical retrieval basket used for entrapping and extracting objects such as urinary and biliary calculi from the body comprising a handle assembly, a flexible shaft, and a basket. The basket comprises a plurality of outwardly disposed shape memory wires and is bulbous in shape at its distal end. Located at the intersection point of the wires at the distal end of the basket is a hub that restricts the degree of relative movement between the wires. This hub also serves to increase contact points with the object to be retrieved and to stabilize the orientation of the basket wires. The substantially tipless configuration of the distal end of the basket permits the basket to retrieve objects from difficult to reach locations and reduces tissue trauma caused by the basket tip. The basket wires have varying cross sectional shapes and sizes in different sections of the basket to optimize the performance to the needs of each section within the basket.

Abstract: A rooter includes a rotatable element, an actuator for causing the rotatable element to rotate, and a coupling feature for rotatably coupling an elongate medical instrument to the rotatable element. The rotatable element may be at least partially contained within the interior of a housing or another element that remains substantially stationary as the actuator causes the rotatable element to rotate. The rooter may be used with a variety of elongate medical instruments, such as needles, drill bits, trocars, wires, catheters, tubes, and other elongate instruments that are used to enable or effect medical procedures within the body of a subject. The rooter may be used for a variety of purposes, including, without limitation, the introduction of an elongate medical instrument into the body of a subject or its removal from the subject's body; removing, breaking up, or eliminating obstructions (e.g., blood clots, plaques, etc.) from the body of a subject; and obtaining samples from a subject's body.

Abstract: A medical device and a method for manipulating a tissue are disclosed. The medical device includes two or more bars, a snare loop and a constricting element. Each bar includes a proximal end, and one or more distal ends, such that the bars are in close proximity at the proximal end. The snare loop maybe coupled to the distal ends of the bars. The constricting element maybe movably coupled to the bars, such that the constricting element expands the snare loop when positioned at the proximal end of the plurality of bars while the constricting element collapses the snare loop when positioned at the distal end of the plurality of bars, thus, keeping the distal end of the snare loop stationary with respect to the tissue.

Abstract: A tissue resection device for resecting tissue from a target site within a patient's body. The device includes an elongate shaft having a proximal end and a distal end. An actuation member extends partially through the shaft, and reciprocates within the shaft between a retracted position and an extended position. Multiple snare wires extend through the actuation member, and emerge outwards from a distal portion of the actuation member. The snare wires cooperate and join to form a snare loop, which engages the tissue intended to be resected. The snare loop is configured to enhance friction while engaging the tissue, to resect the tissue.

In one example, a snare loading device can reduce the size of a loop on a snare to allow the snare to be inserted into the catheter tube. Furthermore, before and/or after insertion of the snare into the catheter tube, the snare loading device can control the snare, by transferring motion thereto.
