  • Patent number: 6780194
Abstract: The clamp includes a passage adjacent to a pivot connection and into which a corresponding pivot pin is at least partially displaced from its original position into a position in which the circumcision clamp becomes inoperative. In one embodiment, the passage is located at one end of the latching member having a notch that is adjacent to a spur so that, when the clamp is moved to a closed position, the spur slips into the notch. The spur and notch resist movement of the latching member thereby causing the pivot pin to be forcibly displaced from its original position into an inoperative position. Select elements of the clamp may be formed of transparent plastic material for allowing a circumcision operator to monitor the glans penis therebeneath so that same is not damaged during a circumcision. Alternately, the clamp may be formed of aluminum and stainless steel. In such an embodiment, the passage is located at one end of the handle.

Abstract: An umbilical cord clamp and cutter assembly with an integral cutting blade. A housing is provided which incorporates a blade, and the housing has removably inserted therein a double clamp in which two clamps are connected by at least one connecting strip. Upon closure of the housing, the double clamp is closed and then the blade becomes engaged and severs the connection between the two clamps. Thus, in one simple one-handed motion, two clamps are closed, and only then the umbilical cord is severed and the clamps are separated in a safe, simple and quick fashion. The motion of closure is similar to other traditional clamps on the market, such that it is easily learned by the user. The two-piece construction simplifies the manufacturing, requiring only the insertion of the double clamp into the housing in a simple motion. The blade is positioned so as to leave minimal tissue after the clamp so as to minimize the opportunity for infection.

A housing having an inner region adapted to retain an umbilical cord in a desired location is provided, the housing having an opening through which the cord extends from the inner region of the housing to a region external to the housing. The cord is cut by a blade coupled to the housing, either by the motion of the blade from a first position to a second position, or by the movement of two portions of the housing from a first extended position to a second collapsed position. The newly cut end of the umbilical cord falls and hangs freely in the inner region of the housing, blood flowing from the placenta and umbilical cord via gravity into a blood collection region of the housing. The blood collection region may be flexible, and may be coupled to a conventional blood collection bag.

  • Patent number: 5676672
Abstract: A disposable umbilical clamp and cutter (10) for clamping a newly born infants umbilical cord in two places, then cutting the cord in between the two clamps (12,14). The clamps are separated and the infant retains its clamp (14) for a short period of time. The clamping surfaces (22) are formed in symmetrical upper (16) and lower (18) halves that rotate about a fold (20) of joining material. Each pair of halves form an enclosed cylinder around the centered umbilical cord when the clamps are closed. Break away connections (24) between the clamps keep them in a semi-rigid, side-by-side arrangement. The clamps are individually closed by putting pressure on two thumb rests (26,28), and opposing pressure with fingers on the lower halves (18), until latches (44) mate with corresponding latch stops (46). Clamps are clearly marked for use on the baby side (14) or the maternal side (12). A `V`-shaped blade (30) is located inside a vertical channel (32) in the maternal clamp (12).

  • Patent number: 5667516
Abstract: A disposal device for clamping, cutting and taking blood samples from an unbilical cord of a newly born infant. When the device is closed around an umbilical cord the cord is compressed and two separate pairs of clamping jaws are locked onto the cord. Further compression of the device severs the cord between two clamps and ejects the clamp which retains the infant's end of the unbilical cord. The jaws holding the mother's end of the cord can be opened enough to allow blood samples to be taken while still holding the cord firmly. The present invention comprises a double jaw clamping mechanism which incorporates a releasable locking means, a double jaw fetal end cord clamp which separates from the body of the device and remains locked to the fetal end of the cord, and a hinged holder containing a blade for severing the cord.
