The device comprises a handpiece and a cutting tool, wherein the tool is inserted through the conduit and percutaneously inserted into a tissue disposed within a recessed area of the handpiece. The device and method cut the fibrous structures under the skin that cause cellulite at an angle substantially parallel to the surface of the skin and replace these structures with a non-cellulite forming structure by deploying a highly fibrous mesh through a single needle hole to create a highly fibrous layer directly or through wound healing processes.

Abstract: For cricothyrotomy and the like, a surgical device has, in one embodiment, a device body with a bi-directional scalpel, an end cap, and a tracheal hook that fits within a channel formed in the device body. With the end cap removed to expose the bi-directional scalpel blade and with the tracheal hook fully inserted within the body channel, the device can be held, e.g., in the dominant hand of an operator, and manipulated to make an opening in the patient's neck using the exposed scalpel blade. The tracheal hook can then be slid away from the device body with the hook's barbed tip entering the opening to enable the operator to easily and quickly secure the surgical airway. The design of the surgical device enables an economy of movements that otherwise would typically not be within the skill set of an operator who was not a surgeon.

Abstract: Biosafety blade devices that aid in the manipulation and safety of either single-edged or double-edged razor blades are disclosed. The devices include finger guards that assist with holding and manipulating a razor blade. The device also includes various embodiments of blade guards that prevent accidental contact with the sharp edge of a razor blade, securely lock a blade preventing reuse, minimize recoil and flying projectiles, control the depth of a skin biopsy, reversibly fix blade curvature and allow for tissue to be measured and securely held to the blade or easily expelled into a specimen container. The components of the biosafety blade, i.e., the finger guards and blade guards, can be used separately or they can be combined to provide for maximum comfort, accuracy, versatility and safety.

Abstract: A method of measuring conditions of an ultrasonic instrument includes providing an ultrasonic instrument that includes an end effector and a waveguide operably coupled to a generator and the end effector. The method involves generating one or more pulses with the generator, transmitting the one or more pulses to one or both of the waveguide and the end effector, generating one or more waves that scatter in an interferential pattern in response to the transmission of the one or more pulses, registering a signal indicative of the interferential pattern, generating an actual interferential pattern based upon the signal, and identifying one or more conditions of the end effector based upon the actual interferential pattern.

  • Patent number: 8657763
Abstract: A vacuum assisted lancing system for blood extraction can include a tubular body having a vacuum chamber, a lancing mechanism configured to removably couple with a lance, a vacuum mechanism including a piston slideably coupled within the body, a release mechanism for selectively holding the vacuum mechanism in an energized state, and an opening for allowing fluid communication between the vacuum chamber and an atmosphere surrounding the vacuum chamber. The system can include structure for selectively commencing dissipation of the vacuum and a fixed or adjustable depth controller. A method of manipulating a surface for blood extraction can include coupling the lancing system to the surface, blocking the opening, creating a vacuum, moving the lance coupler from a first position distal from the surface to a second position proximal to the surface, maintaining the vacuum for a period of time, and commencing dissipation of the vacuum by unblocking the opening.

Abstract: A precision depth guided instrument, such as a Jamshidi needle, is provided for use in various surgeries related to the vertebrae. The instrument includes an outer cannula, an inner cannula and a stylet. After the cortical bone of a vertebra is penetrated by the outer cannula of the instrument, the depth of penetration of the inner cannula is adjusted by rotation of the inner cannula. The inner cannula is then moved further into the vertebrae, and a stop mounted on the outer cannula controls the depth of penetration of the inner cannula. The correct depth of penetration is determined by radiography prior to the procedure.

Abstract: A surgical device mitigates over-puncture with a bias spring that biases a leading, cutting edge in the opposite direction of the anticipated over-puncture. An associated locking mechanism is configured to release the force of the bias spring in a direction counter to the direction of insertion when the tension force of tissue against the cutting edge is released. Thus, when an opening in the tissue forms, the tension is released and the cutting edge can move opposite to the direction of insertion of the surgical device at the same time that an applied force drives the instrument in the direction of insertion. In this manner, the spring and locking mechanism cooperate to move the cutting edge opposite to the direction of insertion as soon as an incision is made.
