    Abstract: A surgical guidance system (SGS) for performing a cruciate pivot osteotomy in canines to treat cranial cruciate ligament disease. The SGS comprises a guide, a jig, and a plate. The guide is first placed over the tibia until it interacts with specific anatomical features of the tibia, thereby marking the proper position for the jig to be placed. After the jig has been secured, a blade defines an osteotomy within a proximal portion of the tibia. A portion of the jig is then cranially rotated providing a rotational correction of the proximal tibia. A compressive force is then applied to the osteotomy by the jig. Next the multiplane locking plate is placed over the osteotomy as dictated by the features of the jig. After initially securing the plate into its correct position, the jig is removed and the plate is then secured to the cranial surface of the tibia.

The first leg terminates at its distal end in a female locking member comprising a resilient inwardly turned hook having a recess in the mouth of the hook, and the second leg member terminates in a male locking member complimentary to the female locking member and comprising a detent such that when the first and second leg members are moved from an open position to a closed position about the hinge section the hook member will deflect about the distal end of the second leg member thereby engulfing the male locking member in the mouth of the hook and matingly engaging the detent in the recess thereof, thus securely locking the clip in the closed position. The locking feature provides greater closure security to the clip when clamping large diameter or uncompressible tissue.

    Abstract: An ultrasonic surgical hand piece is caused to be driven with an output displacement that is correlated with the phase margin, which is the difference of the resonant frequency and the anti-resonant frequency of the hand piece. The resonant frequency is measured at a point during the frequency sweep where the impedance of the hand piece is at its minimum. The anti-resonant frequency is measured at a point during the frequency sweep where the impedance of the hand piece is at its maximum. Using a target or specific output displacement, a drive current is calculated based on the phase margin which is the difference between the resonant frequency and the anti-resonant frequency. The hand piece is caused to be driven with the output displacement, by accordingly controlling the current output from a generator console for driving the hand piece.

    Abstract: A bone saw blade includes a blade body having a cutting section, a hub section and a shank located between the cutting section and the hub section. The blade body is first formed having a substantially uniform Rockwell hardness between approximately Rc 49 and Rc 63 throughout. Next, a cathodic arc process is used to coat the cutting section with a hard, wear-resistant metal nitride coating. During the coating process, ion impingement on the surface of the cutting section creates heat that beneficially anneals the cutting section. Significant annealing of the shank and hub section is prevented during the coating process by stacking the blade bodies together with blade blanks that are formed without cutting sections. The heat generated during coating is insufficient to raise the temperature of the large mass above the annealing temperature of the blade material. The resultant blade has a high strength shank and hub section.
