Publication number: 20140350611Abstract: A soft tissue fixation system, most typically applicable to orthopedic joint repairs, such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) knee repair procedures, comprises an implant which is placeable in a tunnel disposed in a portion of bone, wherein the tunnel is defined by walls comprised of bone. A first member is deployable outwardly to engage the tunnel walls for anchoring the implant in place in the tunnel, and a second member is deployable outwardly to engage tissue material to be fixed within the tunnel. The second member also functions to move the tissue material outwardly into contact with the tunnel walls to promote tendon-bone fixation. Extra graft length is eliminated by compression of the tendon against the bone at the aperture of the femoral tunnel, which more closely replicates the native ACL and increases graft stiffness. The inventive device provides high fixation of tendon to bone and active tendon-bone compression.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 17, 2014Publication date: November 27, 2014Applicant: CAYENNE MEDICAL, INC.Inventor: Joanne Kovalski

Patent number: 8109966Abstract: An innovative bone anchor and methods for securing connective tissue, such as tendons, to bone are disclosed which permit a suture attachment which lies entirely beneath the cortical bone surface, and wherein the suturing material between the connective tissue and the bone anchor is oriented in a direction generally transverse to the longitudinal axis of the bone anchor, so that axial pull-out forces exerted on the bone anchor are minimized. The suture attachment to the bone anchor involves the looping of a substantial length of suturing material around a shaft of the anchor, thereby avoiding an eyelet connection which requires a knot and which concentrates stress on a very small portion of the suturing material. Thus, failure rates are greatly decreased over conventional techniques, and the inventive procedures are significantly easier to perform than conventional techniques.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 2007Date of Patent: February 7, 2012Assignee: ArthroCare CorporationInventors: Mark A. Patent number: 7794484Abstract: A method for attaching soft tissue to bone. The method includes forming a bore in a bone, placing the soft tissue adjacent to the bone and above the bore, at least partially inserting a fixation device into the bore, and delivering biologic material through the soft tissue at an interface area between the soft tissue and the bone.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 2007Date of Patent: September 14, 2010Assignee: Biomet Sports Medicine, LLCInventors: Kevin T. Stone, Gregory J. Denham

Publication number: 20100217325Abstract: Expandable support devices for tissue repair are disclosed. The devices can be used to repair hard or soft tissue, such as bone or vertebral discs. A method of repairing tissue is also disclosed. Surgical devices and methods for adjusting (e.g., removing, repositioning, resizing) deployed orthopedic expandable support devices are also disclosed. The expandable support devices can be engaged and surgically implanted by an engagement device and affixed to bone to provide stability and support for the devices. The expandable support devices are attachable to spinal fixation devices such as screws or plates, and may be used to support such devices when placed in weakened or damaged areas of bone.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 6, 2010Publication date: August 26, 2010Inventors: Stephen H. Publication number: 20100217335Abstract: Described herein are bone implant having bifurcated struts for distracting and supporting bone, as well as systems and methods for treating bone using them. These self-expanding implants for repairing bone may include two or more bifurcated struts that extend from a central body or shaft in the deployed configuration. The stabilization device may be attached to an inserter. An inserter may be used to hold the stabilization device in a collapsed delivery configuration so that it can be inserted into bone.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 31, 2009Publication date: August 26, 2010Inventors: Paul E. Publication number: 20100131019Abstract: A fixing element, in particular a peg, for fixing bone fragments, ligaments or the like, has at least two outer sub-elements which divide the fixing element in the longitudinal direction with respect to a separating surface between the at least two outer sub-elements. The at least two outer sub-elements are of such a configuration and are so arranged relative to each other that the fixing element is adapted to be transferred from a compact condition into a laterally or radially expanded condition. The fixing element is of a dovetail-like configuration at its proximal end for coupling to an instrument for holding and introducing the fixing element.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 15, 2007Publication date: May 27, 2010Inventor: Günter Lob

Patent number: 7643867Abstract: This document discusses, among other things, fiducial marker devices, tools, and methods. One example illustrates a combined computed tomography (CT) imagable fiducial locator head, an integral bone screw, and an integral divot for receiving a positioning wand of an image-guided surgical (IGS) workstation. A further example includes a fluid/gel-absorbing coating or cover into which a magnetic resonance (MR) imagable fluid is introduced, thereby permitting both CT and MR imaging. Protective caps and collars may be used to protect the fiducial marker from mechanical impact and/or to guide the fiducial marker during affixation. A bull's-eye or other template is used to select a center of a substantially spherical fiducial marker head on an image, such as for use during patient registration.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 2003Date of Patent: January 5, 2010Assignee: Medtronic, Inc.Inventors: Matthew S. Patent number: 7572283Abstract: A method and apparatus for reattaching soft tissue to a selected boney structure using a rivet. Generally, a rivet having first portion and a second portion is provided to fully secure a soft tissue in the boney structure. The first portion of the rivet retains the soft tissue via a suture which is threaded through the first portion. The second portion of the rivet has at least one expanding member which engages the boney structure upon contact with the first portion of the rivet. Thus, the soft tissue is fully secured to the boney structure, ensuring proper healing.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 2004Date of Patent: August 11, 2009Assignee: Biomet Sports Medicine, LLCInventor: Jason D Meridew

Patent number: 7481829Abstract: A bone plate for use in anterior lumbar spinal fixation has interlocking components to prevent dislodgement of the plate due to anatomical forces. The exposed surface of the plate is smooth to prevent trauma to internal body tissue. The plate spans the intervertebral space with each end attached to an adjacent vertebrae by locking screws threadably engaged with tubular bone anchors. The bone anchors are threaded into the vertebrae and have a reduced diameter leading end which the locking screws expand to lock the anchor in the vertebrae and secure the end of the locking screw in the anchor. The plate has a countersunk cavity including portions overlapping the locking screws. A locking cap fits in the cavity to secure the other end of the locking screws from backing-out of the plate.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 2003Date of Patent: January 27, 2009Assignee: Atlas Spine, Inc.Inventors: Bret O'Neil Baynham, G.
