  • Patent number: 10314590
Abstract: A surgical severing and stapling instrument, clamps tissue within an end effector of an elongate channel pivotally opposed by an anvil. An E-beam firing bar moves distally through the clamped end effector to sever tissue and to drive staples on each side of the cut. The E-beam firing bar affirmatively spaces the anvil from the elongate channel to assure properly formed closed staples, especially when an amount of tissue is clamped that is inadequate to space the end effector. In particular, an upper pin of the firing bar longitudinally moves through an anvil slot and a channel slot is captured between a lower cap and a middle pin of the firing bar to assure a minimum spacing. Forming the E-beam from a thickened distal portion and a thinned proximal strip enhances manufacturability and facilitates use in such articulating surgical instruments.

  • Patent number: 9198712
Abstract: The present invention provides an Electro Surgical Generator (ESG) optimized for lung biopsy. The ESG is exclusively battery operated and fits within the handpiece of modern endoscopic electrosurgical/electrocautery instruments, thereby avoiding wires, adapters, and coupling mechanisms. The ESG is adaptable to generate different waveforms that vary with respect to frequency, pulse width, amplitude, etc. through the use of timing circuits and voltage control (i.e. transformers). The ESG is both energy-efficient and safe. A closed loop feedback system featuring a monitor and controller ensure no more power than necessary is provided to achieve a goal current level. Dynamic Power Control (DPC) and Dynamic Temperature Control (DTC) systems vary power to maintain temperature with the lowest possible power. These features prolong battery life and guard against tissue damage.

Abstract: A nozzle for attachment to a cold plasma device configured to maintain delivery of a stable cold plasma. The nozzle can have many different shaped apertures to support different applications requiring different shaped cold plasma plumes. Use of a disc of foam material within a nozzle can expand the size of aperture of a nozzle while maintaining delivery of a stable cold plasma. The nozzle can be an elongated cannula tube for internal delivery of a cold plasma treatment. The cannula tube can provide an aperture at its distal end or one or more apertures along its length. A shroud can partially enclose the distal aperture of the nozzle. A sterile sleeve can be used in conjunction with a nozzle to provide a sterile means of attachment and operation of the nozzle with a cold plasma device.

  • Patent number: 9161803
Abstract: An electrosurgical device comprises an end effector, a cutting member, and en electromechanical driver. The end effector comprises a pair of jaws that clamp tissue. The jaws include electrodes that deliver RF energy to clamped tissue. The cutting member cuts tissue clamped between the jaws. The electromechanical driver drives the cutting member. A control module commands the electromechanical driver, and regulates the delivery of RF energy to the electrodes, based on a combination of user input and feedback signals from the electrodes and from the electromechanical driver. The device may provide tactile feedback to the user through the user input feature, based on a load encountered by the cutting member. The device may alert the user when the exterior of end effector makes incidental contact with tissue, to avoid inadvertently burning the tissue. The device may include a removable battery pack to power the electromechanical driver and the electrodes.

  • Patent number: 9125658
Abstract: In the method suitable for tissue fusion or coagulation after the commencement of treatment of the tissue, i.e., after completion of a first phase, a second phase is commenced, during which the biological tissue is treated with moderate energy for a certain specified process time. The specification of a functional relationship between the tissue resistance and the output voltage of a supplying source enables the process in phase II to not fall below a minimum treatment time, avoiding premature drying-out of the tissue. A sufficient and reliable bonding of the participating proteins in a moist milieu is reached.

Abstract: A wall of a uterus is ablated by expanding a structure in the uterus and applying energy across the wall of the structure into the uterine wall. An exterior surface of the structure conforms to an inner wall of the uterus, and the energy may cause vapor to collect between the wall and the structure. The vapor is released by providing a barrier to release which is inflated at a pressure above which the barrier at least partially collapses to allow the vapor to leave the uterus.

Abstract: Ablation is carried out by bringing a probe into contact with a target tissue. The probe has a plurality of temperature sensors and an ablation electrode on its distal portion. The temperature sensors are distributed circumferentially about the longitudinal axis such that the probe has an omnidirectional temperature sensitivity. After verifying that contact exists between the probe and the target tissue, and while applying energy through the ablation electrode data from the temperature sensors is repetitively recorded. Thereafter, responsively to detection of a drop in temperature with respect to the baseline temperature level, it is concluded that a loss of contact between the probe and the target tissue has occurred. The operator is thereupon alerted.
