Publication number: 20090183514Abstract: A refrigerated container and method capable of maintaining super frozen temperatures of about ?50 degrees C. or less, includes container walls insulated to a value of at least about r-20, a cargo compartment configured for receiving cargo, and at least one refrigerant compartment configured for receiving refrigerant in the form of CO2 snow. The refrigerant compartment maintains the CO2 snow and vapor sublimating therefrom separately from the cargo compartment. The refrigerant compartment is located within the cargo compartment and configured to permit ambient atmosphere within the cargo compartment to contact at least three sides, and up to six sides, of the refrigerant compartment. The placement of the refrigerant compartment is also configured to generate a temperature gradient within the cargo compartment capable of generating convection therein, so that the super frozen temperatures are maintained within the cargo compartment without the use of external power sources.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 8, 2009Publication date: July 23, 2009Inventors: George A. Patent number: 5363670Abstract: A self-contained cooler/freezer apparatus for carrying items in a frozen or refrigerated environment. The apparatus comprises an insulated container which is divided into two portions. The first portion is utilized for item storage and the second portion houses a pressurized coolant compartment for storing a solid coolant; namely, solid carbon dioxide or dry ice. The pressurized coolant compartment comprises removable insulation panel. These insulations panels are utilized to control the rate of heat transfer from the first portion to the dry ice within the pressurized coolant compartment. Based upon number of factors including desired temperature, storage duration, total item weight, the quantity of dry ice and the number of removable insulation panels can be determined. In essence, the pressurized coolant compartment is a controllable heat sink. Within a short period of time, the dry ice starts to sublimate, thereby forming cold gaseous carbon dioxide at a high pressure.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 1993Date of Patent: November 15, 1994Inventor: Anthony Bartilucci

Patent number: 4276752Abstract: A refrigerated cargo container, comprising no moving parts, for use in transporting temperature sensitive cargoes in aircraft. The container has six insulated walls with an insulated door along part of one of the walls, preferably the container's front wall, to provide for an air-tight container when the door is closed. An insulated bunker, having an insulated wall about a portion of its outer surface and a heat exchange portion along its bottom surface, containing a coolant such as solid carbon dioxide, is located within one of the top corners of the insulated cargo container. An air inlet duct extends along the top wall of the insulated container to one side of the insulated bunker to allow warm air from the interior of the container and the cargo to flow into the inlet duct along the top wall of the container and to pass along the side and bottom of the coolant bunker where the warm air is cooled by the heat exchange portion of the bunker.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 1978Date of Patent: July 7, 1981Assignee: Pax Equipment Management, Inc.Inventors: Peter R. Patent number: 4015440Abstract: Apparatus for providing an expendable refrigerant which is emitted from a snow horn at a low velocity thereby enabling snow agglomeration at a close proximity to the horn exit and accurately delivering a charge of snow with minimum vapor loss. The desired snow is produced by introduction of the relatively warm liquid refrigerant into an insulated compartment and in heat exchange relation with a tube therein having a plurality of length/diameter ratios. The liquid refrigerant is effective to warm the tube walls and results in a slight cooling of such liquid which is then passed to a subcooler and returned to the tube inlet for expansion in several stages therein to form the snow. The product snow is emitted from this horn at a relatively low velocity and may be accurately directed into cavities of such products as eviscerated fowl.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 1975Date of Patent: April 5, 1977Assignee: Airco, Inc.Inventors: Victor F.
