Patent number: 6393855Abstract: Methods and devices for retaining a heating element, such as warm refrigerant tubing, within a refrigerator cabinet. Semispherical raised dimples are formed upon a retaining panel in a rolled triple flange. The dimples are intermittently positioned along the retaining panel and maintain the warm refrigerant tubing in intimate surface contact with the exterior surface panel of the refrigerator. The raised dimples preclude significant intimate surface contact between the retaining panel and the tubing and permit insulating foam to be disposed between the two so that heat transfer is minimized. A dimpled flange arrangement is also used to retain tubing within a mullion. A sheet metal insert is also described that is formed having two retaining panels with raised dimples thereupon that maintain the tubing in intimate surface contact with the exterior surface panel that forms the facing for the mullion.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 2001Date of Patent: May 28, 2002Assignee: Maytag CorporationInventors: Bart Schuchert, Gene Schuchert, David Olberding, Ron Haltmeyer, Forrest Wing

Patent number: 6029471Abstract: In refrigeration; in order to transfer heat from the heat supplier, or to the heat absorber, it is necessary that temperature gradients be maintained between said heat exchangers and the interacting medium. These temperature gradients increase the difference between the temperature of the heat supplier and that of the heat absorber. The efficiency of refrigeration systems decrease as said temperature differences increase. Said mediums, if gaseous, as they frequently are, offer great resistance to heat transfer. This results in large temperature gradients and substantially reduces refrigeration efficiency. The present invention involves enveloping the enclosed space with the enclosure heat exchanger so that less heat has to be transferred through the gaseous contents, and additional, inexpensive, heat transfer surface becomes available. The reduction in temperature gradients result in increased efficiency.Recovery of reject heat for residential type water heating is also included as a natural extension.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 1993Date of Patent: February 29, 2000Inventor: Christopher Taylor

Patent number: 6006541Abstract: The surroundings heat exchanger envelops an enclosure's insulation so that it exchanges part of its heat load directly through the enclosure, instead of indirectly with the surroundings which would then exchange an equal amount of heat with the enclosure. This reduces the temperature differentials required to drive heat a transfer because little heat remains to be transferred by the indirect path.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 1994Date of Patent: December 28, 1999Inventor: Christopher Taylor

Patent number: 5950710Abstract: An overheat regulating system (10) for a passenger compartment (200) of a vehicle comprising at least one thermal conductor (2) containing a phase-change working substance (18) for cooling the overheated passenger compartment (200) automatically without consuming any man-made power when the vehicle is parked outdoor under direct sunshine. The thermal conductor (2) has three sections: an evaporator section (20), which is preferably attached to the inner surface of the roof panel (60) of the passenger compartment (200), a condenser section (22), which is preferably mounted on the top of the roof panel, and an adiabatic section (24), which connects the evaporator section (20) and the condenser section (22) continuously. A shielding slab (70) with open periphery is constructed on the roof panel to shield the condenser section from direct sunshine. The evaporator section (20) absorbs excess heat from the overheated vehicle passenger compartment and the absorbed heat vaporizes the working substance (18).Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 1997Date of Patent: September 14, 1999Assignee: ContinOcean Tech Inc.Inventor: Chunyan Liu

Patent number: 5910210Abstract: Meals are placed on individual trays in an institutional kitchen. The individual trays have a first part carrying the meal portion intended to be eaten hot and covered with a thermally insulative cloche and a second part carrying the meal portion intended to be eaten cold. The individual trays are transported in a thermally insulated enclosure to the places where the meals are to be eaten, where they are distributed into local individual units having a thermally insulated enclosure. Each individual unit includes retractable contact terminals operated by an electromagnet and contacting external terminals on the cloche which are in turn electrically connected to an electrical heating element of the cloche. Accordingly, by supplying power to the contact terminals, the meal portions intended to be eaten hot and placed under the cloches are selectively heated. The device is relatively inexpensive and facilitates meal handlings in compliance with hygiene conditions.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 1998Date of Patent: June 8, 1999Assignee: Societe Cooperative de Production BourgeoisInventors: Jean-Charles Violi, Raymond Violi, Jean-Francois Ferbus

Patent number: 5725294Abstract: A refrigerator includes a front face surrounding the front openings of the storage compartments. Operation of the refrigerator tends to cause some portions of the face to be colder than the dew point temperature of the surrounding air. Moisture in the surrounding air tends to condense on such colder than dew point portions. Sheets of aluminum foil are in intimate contact with the inside of the case, extend along those portions of the face subject to condensation and project onto adjacent areas of the case which are warmer than the dew point temperature. This keeps the temperature of those portions subject to condensation above the dew point temperature. Portions of the doors, such as the adjacent peripheral walls of doors on multi-compartment units, also may tend to be below the dew point temperature. Sheets of aluminum foil are positioned in intimate contact with the inside of those portions of the doors and project onto adjacent areas of the doors which are warmer than the dew point temperature.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 1997Date of Patent: March 10, 1998Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: Stephen Bernard Froelicher

Patent number: 4718249Abstract: Disclosed is a method of and apparatus for heating and cooling. The method and apparatus employ a thermodynamic moat across which heat energy conductance can be entirely prohibited. The moat comprises a heat source for a heat pump. The heat pump can be contained within the thermal protection of the moat. Thus its energy of operation may be added to, rather than lost from, the system. Structures for absorbing solar irradiation are disclosed, as are means to contain these structures within the protection of the moat, thereby to overcome grave deficiencies of solar collectors used in cold climates. A method of and apparatus for utilizing the solar absorber structures for summer cooling are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 1985Date of Patent: January 12, 1988Inventor: Wallace G.
