  • Patent number: 6610101
Abstract: The invention relates to an automated speed-adaptive and patient-adaptive control scheme and system for a knee prosthesis. The control scheme and system utilizes sensory information measured local to the prosthesis to automatically adjust stance and swing phase knee resistances to a particular wearer under a wide variety of locomotory activities. Advantageously, no patient-specific information needs to be pre-programmed into the prosthetic knee by a prosthetist or the patient. The system is able to adapt to various types of disturbances once the patient leaves the prosthetist's facility because it is patient-adaptive and speed-adaptive.

  • Patent number: 6517585
Abstract: A lower limb prosthesis for an above-knee amputee has an adaptive control system which includes a knee flexion control device arranged to resist flexion at the knee joint both hydraulically and pneumatically by means of a dual piston and cylinder assembly. Sensors arranged to sense knee bending moments and knee flexion angle provide electrical signals which are fed to a processing circuit for automatically adjusting the hydraulic and pneumatic resistance to flexion according to the activity mode of the amputee and, when walking, according to the speed of the cylinder containing hydraulic fluid. The hydraulic resistance to flexion predominates during the stance phase and pneumatic resistance predominates during the swing phase. Provision is made for programmable resistance during level walking, walking on an incline, descending stairs and during a stumble.

Abstract: Interference-free coil systems are coil systems having at least two coils which are identical in terms of inductance. These coils are arranged such that their magnetic fields are antiparallel to one another. Consequently, induced voltages within the coils are substantially eliminated when the coils are exposed to a homogeneous electromagnetic field. If exposed to an nonhomogeneous electromagnetic field, however, a net voltage is induced and enables the extraction of data and power. Reed switch configurations in the implantable prostheses protect against induced voltages caused by the radio frequency field generated by an MR imager when the reed switches are mounted parallel to the plane of a receiver. Reed switch configuration may be used to disconnect, de-tune, or short circuit a receiver. For example, they may be used to disconnect the receiver diodes.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a variable-torque magnetorheologically actuated prosthetic knee which utilizes a plurality of interspersed and alternating rotors and stators to shear magnetorheological fluid in gaps formed therebetween. Advantageously, by operating in the “shear mode” there is substantially no or negligible fluid pressure buildup or change. Moreover, the multiple MR fluid gaps or flux interfaces desirably allow for the production of a large torque at low speed—eliminating the need for a transmission—and also for a wide dynamic torque range. One embodiment of the invention allows the rotors and/or stators to close the gaps therebetween to create a frictional torque component, thereby forming a “hybrid” braking system which provides a total torque or damping which is a combination of viscous torque and frictional torque.

Abstract: A flexible lead screw and motor combination is provided that attaches to the body and has the ability to move body parts. The invention contains at least one motor actuated cincture screw that transfers torque over an articulating joint of the body. A high torque motor is mounted on a suitable location of the body, on one side of the articulating joint to be moved. The motor is attached, through a cable having an externally threaded cincture, to an internally threaded guide bushing mounted to a body location on the opposite side of the articulating joint. In certain mounting locations, the cable routing will be redirected by guide rings before entering the guide bushing. Activation of the motor rotates the cable and, depending on the threads and the direction of rotation chosen, either pulls the threaded guide bushing toward, or away from the motor. Thus, the joint lying between the attached motor and attached guide bushing can be either closed or opened.

  • Patent number: 5836996
Abstract: The present invention is an artificial retina system that is sufficiently small so as to be fully implantable in the human eye. The artificial retina system comprises an array of artificial retinas. Each artificial retina comprises a light sensing element; an emitter element, where the emitter element is coupled to the light sensing element; and a detector element, where the detector element receives signals from the emitter element. The light sensing element intercepts light and transmits an electrical signal to the emitter element. In response to the electrical signal received from the light sensing element, the emitter element emits a signal. In response to the signal emitted by the emitter element, the detector element transmits an electrical signal to the retinal nerves. The intensity of the electrical signal sent to the retinal nerves is directly proportional to the intensity of the incoming light.

Abstract: A low-pressure neural contact structure for contact with neural tissue, for example, neural tissue of the retina within which are ganglion cells to be electrically stimulated. The contact structure comprises a first portion for attachment to a first bodily location, such as the inner surface of the retina, and a second portion interconnected with the first portion via an interconnection and being held in contact with the neural tissue. The interconnection exhibits a weak restoring force which in conjunction with the geometry of said second portion provides a preselected desired pressure of contact against the neural tissue. As adapted for the retina, the interconnection exhibits a weak restoring force developed in response to curvature of the interconnection along the inner radius of the retina.

  • Patent number: 5571205
Abstract: This invention relates to an above knee prosthesis which employs a hydraulic damper to passively regulate the angular velocity or rotation of the artificial knee joint. A programmed microprocessor recognizes common gait patterns from information received from bending moment strain and knee angle sensors on the prosthesis. The microprocessor, under the control of a rule-based program, reacts at various transition points in the gait by activating a motor which in turn adjusts a valve assembly in the damper. The valve assembly is capable of variably and separately damping the knee joint motion in each of flexion and extension at the same time. Gait is improved because of the improved extent of control of knee action. In addition, distinct routines such as stair descending and sitting down can also be practised.

Lateral and medial and torsional movement are accommodated. Energy is absorbed and stored by the prosthetic foot during heel strike in the gait cycle, energy is transferred to the forefoot extension section during foot roll-forward to toe-off in the gait cycle, and energy is released to provide a propelling force on the prosthetic foot at toe-off in the gait cycle. An apparatus allowing the wearer of the prosthetic foot to feel by physical sensation forces being applied to the prosthetic foot is included in one embodiment.

  • Patent number: 5556423
Abstract: Microscopic photodiode devices with semi-transparent surface electrodes are combined with a liquid or other suitable vehicle. Together they are injected into the subretinal space of the eye. The purpose of these microphotodiode photovoltaic devices is to transduce incident light into electric current which stimulate the overlying cellular layers of the retina. In persons suffering from visual dysfunction due to outer retinal layer damage, such devices may allow useful formed artificial vision. These independent surface electrode microphotodiodes (ISEMCPs) may be in the shape of micro-spheres, micro-cylinders or other micro-shapes. An off-center embedded ferromagnetic layer will confer magnetic susceptibility to the ISEMCPs. A magnetic field applied in the vicinity of the eye will align the ISEMCPs within the subretinal space directing their photoactive surface toward incident light.

Abstract: A control system and method for prosthetic devices is provided. The control system comprises a transducer for receiving movement from a body part for generating a sensing signal associated with that movement. The sensing signal is processed by a linearizer for linearizing the sensing signal to be a linear function of the magnitude of the distance moved by the body part. The linearized sensing signal is normalized to be a function of the entire range of body part movement from the no-shrug position of the moveable body part through the full-shrug position of the moveable body part. The normalized signal is divided into a plurality of discrete command signals. The discrete command signals are used by typical converter devices which are in operational association with the prosthetic device. The converter device uses the discrete command signals for driving the moveable portions of the prosthetic device and its sub-prosthesis.
