  • Publication number: 20020178753
Abstract: The sleeve-type glass melt agitator has a rotatable cylindrical sleeve provided with openings or small loops in its outer surface. The sleeve type agitator is arranged vertically in a glass melt feed channel in a glass melt feed system for making glass tubes or pipes according to the Vello or down-drawn process. During formation of glass tubes or pipes from the glass melt the sleeve-type agitator is rotated as the glass melt flows downward to prevent formation of schlieren in the glass melt, which causes glass material losses.

  • Publication number: 20020023464
Abstract: A molten glass pump preferably includes one or more pumps which form either a single-stage apparatus or are combined in series to form a multi-stage apparatus. The exact configuration depends on the required process pressure and the required degree of glass homogenization. Examples of the invention include an auger pump and a mixing auger pump which have varying degrees of mixing action, as well as a homogenizing pump which provides some pumping action but is primarily a homogenizer. All three pumps preferably include a centerline flow recirculation feature which remixes inhomogeneous glass into the incoming glass stream. A counter-rotating sleeve, which straightens the glass flow exiting the apparatus and provides an additional flow recirculation path, is also preferably included.

  • Patent number: 5944863
Abstract: Apparatus for forming a cased glass stream having an inner core glass surrounded by an outer casing glass includes a first orifice for receiving core glass from a first source. A second orifice is vertically spaced beneath and aligned with the first orifice, and is surrounded by a chamber that communicates with the second orifice through a gap between the first and second orifices. A spout delivers casing glass from a second source through a tube to the chamber in such a way that glass flows by gravity from the first and second sources through the orifices to form the cased glass stream. Rate of glass flow through the second or casing glass source is measured and compared with one or more preset limits. Rate of casing glass flow from the second source to the chamber surrounding the orifices is adjusted when rate of flow through the second source departs from the preset limit. In this way, a desired ratio of casing glass to core glass is automatically maintained.

  • Patent number: 5622541
Abstract: A basin for a forehearth of a glass-making furnace having an internal volume divided into upper and lower portions by an annular shoulder is described wherein the horizontal cross-sectional area of the upper portion is significantly greater than that of the lower portion. The base of the basin has a glass discharge outlet therein. In use, the discharge outlet is aligned with a relatively movable cylinder which acts as a flow metering valve. The cylinder can be rotated about its axis at a constant or adjustable speed, or the cylinder can be non-rotating and have a separately driven stirrer movable about it to prevent or reduce the formation of stagnant areas.

  • Patent number: 4832725
Abstract: The refractory tube controlling the flow of glass from a glass feeder bowl is combined with a rotary stirring device used to control surface cord into one unit, herein called a "Tubex"; thereby eliminating one of the two rotary drive mechanisms and also eliminating alignment and relative rotary speed problems. The stirrers are diamond-shaped platinum-rhodium alloy blades connected to the refractory element, preferably as three, equally-spaced stirrers at a common radius on the rotated Tubex element. A novel rotary support mounting and drive for said element is provided. The Tubex is used in TV panel glass manufacturing.

  • Patent number: 4339261
Abstract: A continuous tank-type glass melting furnace includes a melting zone into which raw materials are charged and reduced to a molten state. The molten glass then flows through a relatively narrow waist or conditioning area to refining and conditioning zones, and is then withdrawn as a continuous ribbon or sheet. Within the waist area there is provided a plurality of stirrers whose mixing and kneading action assist in homogenizing the glass as it flows through the restricted area. Each stirrer is connected to and driven by its own individual power unit so that the speed and direction of rotation of individual stirrers can be independently regulated and synchronized. Individual stirrers can also be removed and replaced with little or no interruption in operation of the remaining units.
