    Abstract: This invention addresses technical problem of optimizing output of a melt cascade, which is used in production of mineral fiber (so called mineral wool as known in state of the art being stone wool, slag wool or other type of mineral wool). These technical problems are solved by steps of determining (a) trajectory of movement of a melt stream, (b) melt concentration relative to surrounding air between the first and the second rotating wheels, and (c) movement vector, and further by regulating of movement of melt stream (i.e., drop mass), said regulation mostly achieved through variation in point of contact of melt and rotating wheel or plurality thereof. This is achieved by determining three key parameters: (a) trajectory of movement of melt stream, (b) melt concentration relative to surrounding air between the first and the second rotating wheels, and (c) movement vector, and further by analyzing these three key.

    Abstract: The present invention provides improved cooling of a veil of glass fibers by using a combination of nozzle assemblies. The nozzle assemblies include air caps of differing configurations to control the penetration of the spray into the veil. One suitable spray configuration is a nozzle assembly having punch air cap that creates a narrow exit angle, high velocity flow of droplets to penetrate the veil to cool the fibers at the interior. Another suitable configuration is a nozzle assembly having a flat air cap that creates a wide exit angle, low velocity, dispersed spray pattern to cool the exterior of the veil. Preferably, the flat air cap creates a very fine particle size to increase the cooling efficiency of the spray. By using the cooling ring of the present invention, lower levels of binder to be applied to the fibers and environmental emissions from the plant may be reduced.

    Abstract: A method of manufacturing mineral fibers includes rotating an orificed spinner and supplying molten mineral material to the spinner to centrifuge streams of molten mineral material. A downward annular flow of attenuating gases is directed to attenuate the streams of molten mineral material into mineral fibers. A mixture of combustion air and combustion gas is supplied to an annular burner positioned around the spinner. Heat from the annular burner is directed toward the spinner and the streams of molten mineral material to heat the spinner and assist in attenuating the streams of molten mineral material into mineral fibers. A pressure sensor senses the pressure of the combustion air prior to the introduction of the combustion air to the burner. The pressure of the combustion air is controlled in response to the sensed pressure to maintain the pressure of the combustion air at a specific pressure.

    Abstract: A duct assembly is employed for directing a central air flow upwardly toward the rotating spinner assembly of a rotary-type fiberizer that produces a downwardly flowing column of fibers. The central air flow eliminates the low-pressure zone that normally occurs beneath the spinner assembly of conventional fiberizers. The cross-sectional profile of a lower portion of the duct is vertically elongated where the duct passes through the fiber column so as to facilitate the flow of the fiber column over the duct. A shielding member can be positioned to deflect the central air flow away from the spinner assembly and against the interior of the fiber column to insulate the spinner assembly from the relative cool air flow. In another embodiment, a conduit extends through the fiberizer spinner assembly and directs a cooling gas beneath the spinner assembly within the interior of the fiber column.

    Abstract: The invention relates to an arrangement for cleaning a wool chamber in the manufacture of mineral wool. In the manufacture of mineral wool a binder is added to the stream of fibers which is deflected towards the wool chamber and the binder deposits itself in fine droplets in the fibers. The binder-laden fibers which touch against the walls and roof of the wool chamber adhere to them because the binder hardens upon contact with the hot surfaces. Gradually a hard deposit of binder and fibers is formed upon the walls. According to the invention cleaning of the walls is substantially simplified by means of making the walls and/or roof of a double walled construction, perforating the inner walls and applying a reduced pressure in the cavity between the walls holding a detachable lining against the inner walls by means of suction.

By being so balanced, the spinner is less likely to exhibit temperature induced deformation that introduces undesirable process variables during the fiber manufacturing process.
