  • Patent number: 6737828
Abstract: A washing machine motor drive device drives a motor using an inverter circuit, which implements a constant torque control through a change in the torque-revolution speed characteristic of the motor. This facilitates an easy control of braking torque (negative torque), thereby providing a maximized braking torque. An easy control of regenerative energy is also provided, and back electromotive force is consumed by the internal resistance of the motor. Practically described, DC power of a rectifier circuit connected to an alternating current source is converted by an inverter circuit into AC power for driving the motor for operating an agitator or a washing/spinning tub. Motor rotor position is detected by rotor position detector, motor current is detected by current detector, and a control device controls the inverter circuit for resolving the motor current into a current component corresponding to magnetic flux and a current component corresponding to torque.

Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed for detecting mass transfer in a rotating device or rotating system, such as a washing machine or dishwasher. Mass may be transferred from the stationary member to the rotating member. The transfer of the mass from the stationary member to the rotating member may be detected utilizing a sensor. A controller linked to the rotating system thereafter may receive a signal that the transfer of mass has been detected, in response to detecting the transfer of mass, thereby permitting the controller to compensate future mass placements in the rotating system according to measured latencies. The mass may comprise a fluid. The fluid itself may be conductive. A gap is generally configured between the stationary member and the rotating member. At least one wire connected to the sensor may be inserted into a stream of such fluid that is created when injectors are activated.

  • Publication number: 20030024280
Abstract: A power controller for an appliance, especially a washing machine, is operative to place the appliance into a hyperspin mode. When in the hyperspin mode, the washing machine rotates its washing basket at a higher speed in relation to a traditional spin mode for the washing machine. In order to prevent damage to the washing machine that could result from spinning heavier, unbalanced loads at higher speeds (i.e. hyperspin speeds), a controller detects vibration of the washing machine basket while the items are being spun at a lower speed (i.e. at the speed of the traditional spin mode). If the washing basket vibration is less than a predetermined threshold vibration value, the washing machine controller operates to cause the washing machine to rotate its washing basket at a higher speed. This results in removal of more water from the clothes being spun dried.

  • Patent number: 6442979
Abstract: A method and device for driving a clothes washing machine motor at a predetermined speed is presented. The washing machine motor, which may be an AC induction motor, is powered by a DC to AC inverter that includes a DC bus. The DC bus current is measured and the inverter output frequency is adjusted in response to the DC bus current measurement. In exemplary embodiments, measuring the DC bus current includes measuring the voltage drop across a resistor coupled to the DC bus. The frequency adjustment may be calculated by multiplying the DC bus current by a compensation factor to calculate a frequency adjustment value. Alternatively, frequency adjustment values may be stored in a look-up table, and the measured DC bus current is used to index the look-up table.
