    Abstract: A washing machine includes a drum for receiving laundry which washing machine not only prevents the laundry from becoming entangled in a complicated manner when the drum is rotated, but also beat-washes the laundry sufficiently. The washing machine includes a partition plate that is fixed to the inner circumferential surface of the drum and that divides the internal space of the drum into two washing compartments. The drum receives two washes in the respective washing compartments, and is rotated while reversing its rotation direction repeatedly. The partition plate and drum are rotated counterclockwise to an angle within a predetermined range and clockwise to an angle within a predetermined range. This allows the washing machine to repeat an operation of causing one of the two washes to slip down from a high position to be beat-washed and the other wash to be immersed in cleaning fluid for stain decomposition.

A generally cylindrical sleeve is fixed to this screw and is coaxially received within the tube between the screw and the tube. A treatment liquid is flowed axially in one direction through the housing and respective batches of articles to be washed are held in the compartments between the flights. For washing the screw is oscillated back and forth about the axis through substantially more than 360.degree. to agitate the articles in the liquid. Periodically the screw is rotated about the axis through substantially more than 720.degree. in a rotation direction to advance the batches axially opposite the direction of liquid flow.

Washing media is fed to the chambers by means of a pipe disposed on a central axis of the drum, the pipe being sub-divided into individual pipe portions by the helical surface of the conveyor worm, with each pipe portion including at least one outlet aperture communicating with a respective one of the chambers. At least one emptying aperture is provided in the drum for each chamber and through which washing media can be discharged from the chamber. During washing, each chamber is separated from the other chambers, so that the machine can wash different types of washing at the same time.

A flange extends substantially radially outwardly from the drum, and from between each pair of adjacent segments thereof, thereby dividing the gap between the drum and the casing into pockets or chambers, means being provided for obtaining a fluid-tight seal between each flange and the casing.
