In order to manage the occurrence of the condition of suds lock, the state of the washing machine related to the suds lock condition during spray pretreatment is determined by one or more of a number of methods. With this information concerning the state of the spray pretreatment process, the occurrence of suds lock can be ascertained and the cycle can be controlled accordingly to minimize negative effects resulting from a prolonged suds lock condition. Additionally, with certain information related to the occurrence of suds lock, steps can be taken during the spray pretreatment portion of the cycle to avoid the condition of suds lock altogether. The washing machine may also include a pulsator located in the inner tub for applying a force to clothing in inner tub. During a first washing cycle, the controller causes the inner tub to rotate, and the nozzle to spray fluid onto clothing in the inner tub. During the first washing cycle, a fluid level in the outer tub may be controlled so that it is lower than the inner tub. During a second washing cycle, the inner tub is held stationary, and the pulsator applies a force to clothing in the inner tub, as occurs in conventional washing machines. Because the fluid level in the washing machine can be kept quite low during the first washing cycle, less water and less detergent is required. Also, because the level of the water is kept below the rotating inner tub during the first washing cycle, less force and thus less energy are required to rotate the inner tub.

  • Patent number: 5345637
Abstract: A wash system is provided having a rotatable wash basket for receiving fabric items disposed within an imperforate wash tub. A quantity of wash liquid is initially applied to the fabric items while the fabric items are tumbled within the wash basket until the fabric items are saturated with wash liquid and have had a chance to roll-up. The washing liquid is then extracted from the fabric items and the extracted wash liquid is stored for later use in a holding tank. A portion of the stored wash liquid is reintroduced from the holding tank to a mixing tank and mixed with detergent to form a wash liquor having a detergent concentration within a predetermined range. This wash liquor is then continuously passed through the fabric items while the wash basket rotates at a speed to maintain the fabric items against a peripheral wall of the wash basket.

  • Patent number: 5325677
Abstract: A fabric washing machine includes a container to receive fabrics and washing fluid. An SRM is operatively connected to oscillate and rotate the container. Ribs formed on the center post of the container agitate the fabrics and fluid as the container is oscillated. Just prior to a spin extraction operation the container is oscillated with an asymmetric pattern that travels further in one direction than in the other. To minimize wrapping of the fabrics about the center post the asymmetric pattern is periodically reversed. Also, just prior to the spin operation the motor is operated at a constant torque and the time to accelerate the container from one speed to a higher speed is measured one or more times. The inertia of the load, and thus the size of the fabric load, is calculated from the time measurements. The motor then is operated at a constant torque to accelerate the container from a threshold speed for a predetermined period of time and the final speed of the container is measured.

  • Patent number: 4987627
Abstract: A method for laundering a textile wash load is provided for use in a vertical axis washing machine in which a concentrated detergent solution is continuously applied to a spinning wash load for a predetermined time period to thoroughly wet the clothes load. The initial charge of detergent is thoroughly mixed with the detergent in a recirculation step before being applied to the clothes load. The concentration wash liquid is incrementally applied to the spinning clothes load until a sufficient amount of wash liquid is detected as having been introduced to the wash zone. That amount of wash liquid is then recirculated and reapplied to the clothes load for a predetermined length of time. After the time period, additional water is added to the solution to dilute it to a normal concentration and then mechanical agitation and rinsing steps are conducted to complete the wash cycle.

  • Patent number: 4727733
Abstract: The washing machine functions according to a new principle and contains the washable items, particularly washable textiles, in stacked layers in a mesh cage which is fixed in position at a drum rotatably mounted in a casing. Wash water as well as drying air flows through the preferably stationary or slowly rotating drum containing the washable items, is pumped off at an outlet of the casing, and returns again by way of a recirculation pipe to an inlet of the casing. Intermittent rotation of the drum, for example, by 180.degree., is also possible. In this manner, the wash water or drying air passes through the washable items first from one side and then from the opposite side. All switching procedures are electronically controlled according to a preselected program schedule. The washable items no longer can be damaged by catching on the drum, the wash cycle is more effective and thus shorter than before, and electric energy and chemicals are saved.

  • Patent number: 4557120
Abstract: A process and apparatus for washing fibre stock. The fibre stock is passed along a passage 14 from a stock inlet 15 to a stock outlet 16. The passage is defined by a portion of the inner surface of a substantially horizontal cylindrical screen 4, preferably a wire gauze. Washing liquid such as water is introduced into the passage, preferably by means of apertures 9 in a longitudinally extending hollow member 8. Effluent liquid passes through the screen, for extraction e.g. through outlets 24 and 25. To enable the washing of stock of high consistency e.g. up to 8%, while avoiding plugging of the screen 4, the arrangement is such that the stock only partially fills the cylindrical screen and is subjected to a tumbling action by the rotary movement of the cylindrical screen as the stock moves along the passage 14 to the stock outlet 16. The hollow member 8 is displaced downwardly from the axis of the cylindrical screen, so as to be positioned within the tumbling stock.
