  • Patent number: 4353231
Abstract: Simplified tumbler wheel construction including an outer gate ring and an inner drive ring wherein the two rings are mounted together in snap-lock fashion. The drive ring includes an undulated surface on its outer rim for mating engagement with an inner undulated surface on the mounting surface of the gate ring. The two rings are constructed of suitable resilient material resulting in passive biasing of the undulated surfaces together during normal operation. Adjustment of the drive ring relative the gate ring is accomplished by blocking rotation of the gate ring while applying a rotative force to the drive ring in excess of a predetermined amount to rotate the undulated surfaces relative each other against the resilient bias provided by the two rings. The amount of bias against rotation is controlled by an appropriately placed slot outward of the undulated surface on the gate ring to lower bias resistance to expansion during tumbler wheel adjustment.

  • Patent number: 4312199
Abstract: A gate ring for a combination lock tumbler that has securing means on the gate ring that normally prevents rotation of the gate ring with respect to the drive member. The securing means includes a cam that alternatively releases the securing means to permit rotation of the gate ring with respect to the drive means or returns the securing means to the normal position. The securing means also comprise a flexible web on the gate ring extending adjacent the outside of the drive member. The cam is mounted between the web and a portion of the gate ring. Rotation of the cam to its normal position moves the flexible web to its normal position against the drive member, and rotation of the cam to its releasing position allows the web to move to its releasing position away from the drive member. The web is integrally formed on the gate ring, which is preferably plastic. The web is located along a chord of the circular gate ring perpendicular to a radius extending from the center of the gate ring through to the cam.

  • Patent number: 4142388
Abstract: The tumbler includes a connection between an outer gate ring and an inner drive member of a tumbler wheel together. The gate ring includes a leg on the gate ring with a gripping portion thereon. The leg normally biases the gripping portion to a securing position against the drive member to grip it so that the gate ring and drive member normally rotate together. An opening is provided in the gate ring adjacent the leg having a curved portion about its periphery for receiving a key having a curved portion about its periphery. The key rotates against the curved surface of the opening, and a cam section of the key cams a cam follower portion of the leg when the key is rotated to a releasing position for urging the gripping portion away from the drive member. The camming surface, opening and cam follower are so provided that on rotation of the key in the opening to the releasing position, the biasing effect of the leg is prevented from tending to return the key to the securing position.

  • Patent number: 4123923
Abstract: A combination lock in which an actuator is movable in a predetermined dirion from a rest position to an unlocking position to unlock the lock and is further movable in the predetermined direction beyond the unlocking position to a combination-changing position to permit the combination to be changed. Movement of the actuator to the unlocking position can only occur when combination dials and sleeves coupled thereto are "on-combination". In the combination-changing position of the actuator, the sleeves are uncoupled from the dials. A stop mechanism is normally effective to prevent movement of the actuator to the combination-changing position and is rendered ineffective by depressing a plunger. The same stop mechanism holds the actuator at the combination-changing position during changing of the combination.

  • Patent number: 4014191
Abstract: The combination lock disclosed has a plurality of disc-shaped tumblers mounted side-by-side for individual relative rotation around a common axis. A cylindrical member or drum having a plurality of lugs thereon is located adjacent the outer periphery of the tumblers for movement by a dial around the axis of rotation of the tumblers and for rotation on its longitudinal axis. A ratchet rotates the drum on its longitudinal axis a portion of a revolution each time the dial is returned to a selected position. Each tumbler has a protrusion on its periphery that when engaged by a lug on the drum will cause the tumbler to be rotated with the drum as the drum is moved around the axis of rotation of the tumbler by a dial. The lugs are arranged on the drum so that in one position of the drum the dial will move all of the tumblers to a preselected relative position. An audible or visible signal indicates that the lugs are in this position.

  • Patent number: 3952562
Abstract: A permutation lock assembly incorporated into a door knob and latch mechanism mountable in the standard openings in conventional swinging doors, using conventional door latch hardware. Rotation of an outer dial in a first direction causes rotation of an inner dial which is visible through a window until a number on the inner dial appears at the center of the window. Upon rotation of the outer dial in an opposite direction until a number thereon is aligned with a center mark, the door is unlocked and may be readily opened. When the proper combination is known, the combination may be changed, within a few seconds, from one combination to another. Also incorporated is a clutch device in the external knob that permits the knob to turn in either direction when the door is locked and excessive force is applied, thus preventing damage to the assembly.
