    Abstract: A training device is described for perfecting the art of forcibly opening a door in an emergency. The training device has a frame and a door placed in the frame. A dead bolt is mounted in the door and protrudes from the door in a locked position relative to the frame. A vise is attached to the frame. The vise has a movable jaw mounted on a block and a stationary jaw, and means for tightening the movable jaw against the dead bolt. The dead bolt protrudes from the door between the stationary and movable jaw. A method of using the training device causes the door to pivot and the dead bolt to move off of the vise, thus simulating an actual forced opening.

    Abstract: A system and methods of language identification of natural language text are presented. The system includes stored expected character counts and variances for a list of characters found in a natural language. Expected character counts and variances are stored for multiple languages to be considered during language identification. At run-time, one or more languages are identified for a text sample based on comparing actual and expected character counts. The present methods can be combined with upstream analyzing of Unicode ranges for characters in the text sample to limit the number of languages considered. Further, n-gram methods can be used in downstream processing to select the most probable language from among the languages identified by the present system and methods.

    Abstract: A puck shaped lock including a substantially cylindrical body into which a cavity is formed and a movable bolt that passes through the cavity and is shiftable from a first position advanced across the cavity to a second position substantially withdrawn from the cavity and which can be releasably secured across the cavity fixedly connected to and extending from the puck shaped lock and being securable to a door or a door jamb. The invention further includes a hasp member supporting a first staple securable to a door or a doorjamb. When the puck shaped lock is positioned overlying the hasp member the staple is inserted into the cavity and the movable bolt can be advanced across the cavity and through the opening in the staple whereby the puck shaped lock and the hasp member are secured together and the door is locked.

    Abstract: Methods and apparatus for document based ambiguous character resolution. An application searches a document for words that do not contain ambiguous characters and adds them to a dictionary, then searches the document for words that do contain ambiguous characters. For each ambiguous word, a set of candidate solutions is created by resolving the ambiguous characters in all possible ways. The dictionary is searched for words matching members of the candidate solution set. When a single member is matched, the ambiguous characters are resolved accordingly. When no member or more than one member is matched, a user is prompted to resolve the ambiguous characters. Alternatively, when more than one member is matched, the ambiguous characters are resolved to obtain the largest word, the smallest word, the most words, or the fewest words.

    Abstract: Force-resistant locking devices for electric meter boxes with hinged cove or the like, comprise a stud member mounted to a wall of the box and a flange member received on the stud member, the flange member including a flange overlying a marginal portion of the cover to keep it closed. The flange and stud members together define an opening receiving and fully enclosing a utility lock for securing the flange and stud members together. In one embodiment, the flange member is an angle iron with rectangular metal stock welded to one leg, and the stud is cylindrical and received in an opening through the flange member. The lock-receiving opening intersects the stud-receiving opening and the shear strength of the utility lock holds the locking device together. In another embodiment, the flange member is a section of channel iron and receives a rectangular stud, the lock-receiving opening deployed to utilize the shear strength of the lock.

    Abstract: An automatically closing lock, for a container having a body and a closure mounted for movement to close the body, includes a catch assembly having a catch housing mountable with one of the container body and closure. The catch housing defines a striker surface and a catch surface adjacent the striker surface. A latch assembly, that cooperates with the catch assembly, includes a latch housing mountable on the other of the container body and closure and a latch member mounted for limited pivoted movement in the latch housing. The latch member is formed with at least one hook-like element that is guided to the catch surface and into engagement therewith by the striker surface. A spring compressed in the latch housing urges the latch member and hook-like element into firm contact with the striker surface and into engagement with the catch surface.

    Abstract: A high security lock which is guarded against picking. A disk shaped body is fixed to a hasp and contains a diametric bore with a lock core-receiving chamber at each end. Two cores in such chambers have key plugs which lie on the axis of the bore and are both solidly connected to each other through a rotary bolt which lies between them. The bolt partially intersects a post-receiving recess in the rear face of the body so as to lockingly engage a grooved post over which the hasp is engaged, and has a side-cut-out to clear such post when the bolt is rotated with both of the two key plugs to an unlocked position. A guard casing is rotatably mounted over the lock body and the two lock cores, and has only a single key opening.
