  • Publication number: 20150081641
Abstract: A method and associated systems for backing up a target computer application that comprises identifying and backing up databases and other information repositories upon which the target application depends. The target application is identified and related to a backup requirement that specifies a minimum application-backup frequency. The application's “dependencies” are automatically identified from sources that include configuration files, where each dependency identifies one or more databases or other information repositories that store information upon which the application directly or indirectly depends. If any of these databases or repositories is associated with a backup frequency less than the application's minimum backup frequency, the database or repository is flagged. Each flagged entity's backup schedule is then revised so that the flagged entity's backup frequency is equal to or greater than the application's minimum backup frequency.

  • Patent number: 8983916
Abstract: Embodiments associated with configurable, repeatable, data generation are described. One example method includes manipulating a redundancy parameter that controls data redundancy in binary large objects (BLOBs) to be included in a generated data set. The redundancy parameters may control variations in repeatable variable length sequences included in BLOBs. The example method also includes manipulating a parameter(s) that controls custom designed sequences included in BLOBs. With the redundancy and custom designed sequences described, the example method then generates BLOBs based, at least in part, on the redundancy parameters and the custom-designed sequences. BLOBs may include byte sequences repeated at different frequencies and configurable user-designed sequences. Manipulating the redundancy parameter, manipulating the custom-designed sequences, generating the BLOBs, and providing the BLOBS may be performed by separate processes acting in parallel.

  • Patent number: 8874523
Abstract: A method for asynchronously replicating data onto a tape medium is implemented at one or more server computers associated with a distributed storage system and connected to a tape storage system. Upon receiving a first request from a client for storing an object within the tape storage system, a server computer stores the object within a staging sub-system of the distributed storage system and provides a first response to the requesting client. If a predefined condition is met, the server computer transfers objects from the staging sub-system to the tape storage system. For each transferred object, the server computer adds a reference to the object to a tape management sub-system, identifies a corresponding parent object associated with the object and its metadata within a parent object management sub-system of the distributed storage system, and updates the parent object's metadata to include the object's location within the tape storage system.

Abstract: Backing up a data file can be accomplished by processing, in-line and at a first client, a plurality of datablocks taken from the data file. The processing of each datablock includes creating a unique signature of the datablock and determining whether the signature is contained in a database of signatures. Each signature in the database is associated with previously backed up datablocks. The database of signatures includes signatures of previous backed up datablocks that were backed up from at least one other client. Data are transmitted to a remote backup server for backing up the datablock. The transmitted data characterize a link to one of the previously stored datablocks when the signature of the processed datablock is found in the database of signatures. Related apparatus, systems, techniques, and articles are also described.

Abstract: Data protection programs are installed at each network host. The programs communicate with each other to scan the hosts and identify duplicate and unique data objects stored at the hosts. Duplicate data objects are maintained on the hosts. Unique data objects are broken into chunks, copied to other hosts, and a parity data is calculated. When a network host becomes unavailable and is replaced with a new network host, duplicate data objects stored on the now unavailable network host may be rebuilt on the new network host using the maintained duplicate data objects on the other hosts. Unique data objects stored on the now unavailable network host may be rebuilt on the new network host using the copied chunks and parity data.

Abstract: Data reflecting method for reflecting data of a transfer source system to a transfer destination system, comprising applying a parallel key indicative of the ordering of respective elements constituting data targeted for reflection to the elements in the transfer source system, transferring data from the transfer source system to the transfer destination system, and parallelizing the elements in accordance with the parallel key in the transfer destination system and reflecting same to a database in the transfer destination system. This assures ordering of elements constituting unit data like one transaction using a parallel key indicative of their ordering and executes parallelized reflection processing. Parallel key means that a column name that satisfies predetermined conditions is given the same parallel key, in accordance with which its control is performed. As the predetermined conditions, the determination on whether the column names or the like are the same controls the reflection processing.

  • Patent number: 8855189
Abstract: Both live and offline transcoding of media is managed for storage in a cache. Requests for media are made by a client on a network and media taken from the cache and transcoded for delivery to the client. Media is also transcoded and stored in memory during idle request in anticipation of future requests during idle transcoder time between client requests. A prioritizer manages at least offline transcoding requests. A high priority queue operates at a higher priority than the low priority queue. The high priority queue receives live transcoding requests from a client on the network. A low priority queue receives offline transcoding requests. A media transcoder primarily transcodes media in accordance with requests from the high priority queue for delivery to a client on the network and then secondarily transcodes media in accordance with requests from the low priority queue when the high priority queue is empty.
