  • Patent number: 8949255
Abstract: Techniques are provided for storing files in a parallel computing system using sub-files with semantically meaningful boundaries. A method is provided for storing at least one file generated by a distributed application in a parallel computing system. The file comprises one or more of a complete file and a plurality of sub-files. The method comprises the steps of obtaining a user specification of semantic information related to the file; providing the semantic information as a data structure description to a data formatting library write function; and storing the semantic information related to the file with one or more of the sub-files in one or more storage nodes of the parallel computing system. The semantic information provides a description of data in the file. The sub-files can be replicated based on semantically meaningful boundaries.

Abstract: Concepts and technologies are disclosed herein for generating and using temporal metadata partitions. Metadata can be stored in temporal metadata partitions based upon a time range included in the metadata. Furthermore, metadata can be stored in multiple temporal metadata partitions to which the metadata is relevant. As such, metadata can be stored in manner that allows event data to be understood in the context of temporally accurate and/or relevant metadata. Functionality for executing queries of event data and providing results in view of metadata, as well as the merging of multiple temporal metadata partitions also are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 8938522
Abstract: A content management system (CMS) includes a value-add application with a first set of XML content services, one or more dedicated XML processing servers with a second and other sets of XML content services, and a core CMS with a third set of XML content services. The content management system may be designed to provide XML content services at any of these three tiers of processing. A first threshold is defined that allows the value-add application to determine when to offload XML content services to a dedicated XML processing server. A second threshold is defined that allows the core CMS to determine when to offload XML content services to a dedicated XML processing server. Callback services are included that allow each tier of XML content services to send or receive additional information to complete the XML processing. The result is a content management system that is very powerful and flexible.

Abstract: Embodiments for using a dynamic structure of tables in a schema of a multi-tenant database are provided. For a tenant schema including a set of tenant tables, a label is created for a tenant table in the set of tenant tables. The label is partitioned into a set of constituent primary labels. A subset of columns is selected from the set of n columns of the tenant table, the subset of columns corresponding to a primary label in the set of constituent primary labels. The subset of columns is mapped to a table in the dynamic structure of tables in the schema of the multi-tenant database, the table in the dynamic structure of tables having the primary label. In the multi-tenant database executing in a data processing system, the dynamic structure of tables is populated with data from the tenant schema according to the mapping.

Abstract: A system that implements a scalable data storage service may maintain tables in a non-relational data store on behalf of clients. The system may provide a Web services interface through which service requests are received, and an API usable to request that a table be created, deleted, or described; that an item be stored, retrieved, deleted, or its attributes modified; or that a table be queried (or scanned) with filtered items and/or their attributes returned. An asynchronous workflow may be invoked to create or delete a table. Items stored in tables may be partitioned and indexed using a simple or composite primary key. The system may not impose pre-defined limits on table size, and may employ a flexible schema. The service may provide a best-effort or committed throughput model. The system may automatically scale and/or re-partition tables in response to detecting workload changes, node failures, or other conditions or anomalies.

  • Patent number: 8918436
Abstract: A hybrid database table is stored as both a row and a column store. One or more techniques may be employed alone or in combination to enhance performance of the hybrid table by regulating access to, and/or the size of, the processing-intensive column store data. For example during an insert operation, the column store data may be searched for a uniqueness violation only after certain filtering and/or boundary conditions have been considered. In another technique, a hybrid table manager may control movement of data to the column store based upon considerations such as frequency of access, or underlying business logic. In still another technique, querying of the hybrid table may result in a search of the column store data only after an initial search of row store data fails to return a result.

Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed for naming methodologies for a hierarchical system. In one embodiment, a computer implemented method of organizing instance names in a hierarchical system includes receiving a description of a hierarchical system that includes plurality of instances arranged in different branches in a plurality of hierarchical levels in a physical data structure, creating an instance name data structure configured to describe the corresponding instances in the hierarchical system, where the instance name data structure comprises a map of indexes and a corresponding array of offsets configured to access naming information in a subsequent level, and associating names of instances in the hierarchical system to a corresponding set of unique integers which are arranged in a sequential manner.

Abstract: Provided are a migration apparatus and method for converting a database of a mainframe system into an appropriate database for an open system. The migration apparatus includes: a data extraction module connected with a database of the mainframe system and extracting data composed of Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code (EBCDIC) in binary format; a code conversion module converting the extracted EBCDIC data into American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) code, full-width characters being converted into half-width characters corresponding to ASCII code using a previously set full-width/half-width conversion table; and a data transfer module transferring the data converted into ASCII code to store it in a database previously built in the open system to correspond to the database of the mainframe system. The migration apparatus and method efficiently reuse a conventionally used database via the rehosting process of converting a mainframe system into an open system.

Abstract: Various technologies and techniques are disclosed for providing a framework with a common set of domain-specific entity identifier types that object models representing conceptually similar entities from a domain can use to correlate to model-specific object instances. A particular model-specific object instance of a particular one of the object models can be retrieved using a common set of domain-specific entity identifier types. An instance of a particular domain-specific entity identifier type can be retrieved from a corresponding one of the model-specific object instances. One or more extensibility mechanisms allow third parties to extend the set of domain-specific entity identifier types.

Abstract: Encoding and/or decoding of messages. On the encoding end, a composite encoder encodes message from an internal format that is used by internal system components into an external format. However, the composite encoder may encode the outgoing messages into different external formats on a per-message basis. For incoming message, a composite decoder decodes incoming messages from any one of a plurality of external formats into the internal format also on a per-message basis. A per-message report mechanism permits internal system components and the encoding/decoding components to communicate information regarding the encoding or decoding on a per message basis. XML messages can be converted automatically into Binary messages.

Abstract: In one embodiment, updates to antivirus programs are delivered to customer client computers by pushing an update notification from a support server computer to the customer client computers. To prevent firewalls or other network security mechanism from blocking the notification, the notification may be pushed to the customer client computers by instant messaging, short messaging, or through another customer client computer, for example. After a customer client computer receives the notification, the customer client computer may request the support server computer for the updates. In response to the request, the support server computer may provide updates to the customer client computer.

Abstract: A data augmentation machine may form all or part of a data augmentation system that is configured to augment data. The data augmentation machine may be configured (e.g., by one or more software modules) to access data (e.g., by crawling one or more public or private networks), extract metadata based on the data (e.g., from the data and its source), create a link to additional data (e.g., based on the extracted metadata), and augment the extracted metadata (e.g., by storing augmented metadata with the extracted metadata). Such augmented metadata may be presented (e.g., within a user interface), published publicly (e.g., on a webpage), published privately (e.g., in a report available only to premium subscribers of a data augmentation service), or any suitable combination thereof.

Abstract: A join operation between split data tables includes providing reduction data from first partitions to each partition among second partitions. The reduction data serves to identify actual values in one of the second partitions that also occur in one of the first partitions. Global IDs are assigned. Translation lists including the global IDs are sent to the first partitions. Each first partition and each second partition create globalized lists which can then be combined to generate respective first and second compiled lists. The join operation can then be conducted on the first and second compiled lists.
