Abstract: Some embodiments of a system and a method to detect contention for resource in a cluster file system have been presented. For instance, a processing device may measure time spent performing actual operations by each of a set of nodes in a cluster file system when a respective node holds a lock on a resource and time spent performing overhead operations by the set of nodes without synchronization of clocks across the cluster file system. Then the processing device can determine latency and throughput of the cluster file system based on the time spent performing actual operations and the time spent performing overhead operations.

Abstract: The present invention provides a technique for supporting accurate and smooth creation of a report. Information in which elements belonging to items included in a plurality of items of elements constructing a report are associated with each other between the items is stored in an input support database. Partial information corresponding to an extraction condition designated by an input from an input client by the user is extracted from the input support database and visually output (displayed) in a view in a report creating area.

Abstract: Techniques are presented for automatically selecting information sources that are most relevant to user queries. Results of searches returned by information sources for queries are analyzed and the information sources are ranked based on this analysis. The information sources that have high rankings for a query are subsequently used to search for relevant results. This process can be adaptive, as the returned results of old queries can be analyzed at a later date to update the ranking of the information sources, automatic searches can be performed to update the ranking of the information sources, new queries can be used for analysis and stored, new information sources added, and old information sources deleted. A linguistic library is used to store personal categories for one or more users and general categories. Each category is associated with keywords and ranked lists of information sources. The library also contains general categories, taxonomies, and dictionaries.

Abstract: A hardware-based file system includes multiple linked sub-modules that perform functions ancillary to client data handling. Each sub-module is associated with a metadata cache. A doubly-rooted structure is used to store each file system object at successive checkpoints. Metadata is stored within an object and/or as a separate object. Provisions are made for allocating sparse objects. A delayed write feature is used for writing certain objects into non-volatile storage. Checkpoints can be retained as read-only versions of the file system. Modifications to the file system are accomplished without affecting the contents of retained checkpoints. The file system can be reverted to a retained checkpoint. Multiple file servers can be interconnected as a cluster, and each file server stores requests from another file server. Interconnections between file servers can be dynamically modified. A distributed locking mechanism is used to control access to file system objects stored by the file servers.

The method includes, defining a data transmission unit (DTU) to be sent in an xDSL data stream, defining a retransmit container as a time slot that corresponds to the DTU, maintaining a copy of the DTU and an index corresponding to the retransmit container in a retransmission buffer, transmitting the DTU in the xDSL data stream, determining whether the DTU should be retransmitted, and if the DTU should be retransmitted: identifying the DTU by the retransmit container and retransmitting a copy of the DTU as identified by the retransmit container before the DTU leaves the retransmission buffer.

Abstract: Seek operations required to perform backup and/or restore processes at an HFS server are reduced by localizing storage of data referenced by hash values included in a recipe near the recipe. In a typical embodiment, an HFS server receives a recipe and new underlying data for entry into a hash file system. The HFS server identifies a first storage node for the recipe, contiguously stores the new data in the first storage node, and indexes hash values and storage addresses of the new data in storage nodes selected based on the hash values of the new data. Storage addresses for the new data (and other data referenced by the recipe) are appended to the recipe. Later during a restore process, retrieval of the recipe also retrieves the storage addresses. Data pieces stored contiguously can then be collectively retrieved in one seek rather than in separate individual seeks.

The Web Service interface allows access to stored data via the namespace or without using the namespace (“raw object” access). Due to the internal nature of the mechanism for safeguarding files, this security measure cannot be circumvented by simply connecting the storage device to another host that does not respect the permission rules of the file system.

Abstract: The invention disclosed herein is a context-driven search method comprising three main steps: having a user provide an input phrase that is used to search a collection of language-based information sources; identifying sets of substantially-equivalent expanded phrases that are relevant to the input phrase, wherein these expanded phrases appear in the collection of language-based information sources; and providing the user with set-specific summary information concerning some, or all, of these sets of substantially-equivalent expanded phrases. A compile manager creates a repository within the file system in response to a compilation request. A directory stores file names previously generated by the compile manager during a compilation process. In response to the request for compilation of one of the objects, the compile manager automatically creates the repository within the file system with a unique file name based at least in part on an object name associated with the requested object and a number of file names within the directory that match at least a portion of the object name. Each filename may include one or more characters from a filename portion of the name of an object and one or more characters from a version portion of the name of the object.

Abstract: A method for avoiding directory conflicts across a file system having multiple nodes with one node representing a token manager. For each directory, at least one metanode responsible for directory updates. The method involving obtaining a name-based lock on a filename. Querying the token manager for a lock token. If a new token is obtained, sending a Remote Procedure Call (RPC) to the metanode to obtain matching directory entries, and caching the result of the RPC so that subsequent operations on that filename can be satisfied without additional messages sent to the metanode. Updating a cached directory block in memory by creating a new directory entry in the block or deleting an existing directory entry from the block. Information regarding the updating is sent to the metanode on one of: periodic schedule, a subsequent synchronization event, or when the name-based lock token is revoked.

Abstract: This present invention describes an innovative solution in the area of indexing and searching binary files including various binary files such as multimedia files, including image files, mp3 files and other audio/video files from the public Internet. The invention introduces a way to index binary files such as multimedia files according to their content signatures, which uniquely identify themselves, and search for related files by walking through a graph database constructed during the index phase. The present invention can be used in a search engine and a download engine, as well as with text based index and search technologies. As a result, such extended usage will broaden a multimedia file's context and increase relevant accuracy of the keywords describing the context.

Abstract: In one aspect, the present disclosure describes a process for maintaining file allocation tables (FATs) for a volume of storage medium. The process includes triggering, by a write operation, modification of data in an existing sector of a data file by writing of data to a new sector of the storage medium. The process also includes writing revised used/unused sector information into one FAT and setting a variable indicative of a number of FATs (NOF) to a first value. The process additionally includes copying the one FAT to another FAT and re-setting the variable to a second value.
