  • Patent number: 11782924
Abstract: A method and computer program for optimizing computation and data retrieval of join operations from a multi-node log-structure database system. The database system has one or more data tables each having a plurality of columns. A join index is created for one or more join key columns, with optionally one or more secondary columns, of one of the data tables. The join index is partitioned across at least one computing node, and each join index partition reproduces the log structure storage of the data table. The join index is maintained in a series of incremental operations by replicating the creation or deletion of data segments from the log structure storage of the data table to the join index partitions.

  • Patent number: 11705924
Abstract: A system comprises an encoder configured to entropy encode a bitstream comprising both compressible and non-compressible symbols. The encoder parses the bitstream into a compressible symbol sub-stream and a non-compressible sub-stream. The non-compressible symbol sub-stream bypass an entropy encoding component of the encoder while the compressible symbol sub-stream is entropy encoded. When a quantity of bytes of entropy encoded symbols and bypass symbols is accumulated a chunk of fixed or known size is formed using the accumulated entropy encoded symbol bytes and the bypass bytes without waiting on the full bitstream to be processed by the encoder. In a complementary manner, a decoder reconstructs the bitstream from the packets or chunks.

  • Patent number: 8983959
Abstract: Methods and apparatus teach a digital spectrum of a data file. The digital spectrum is used to map a file's position in multi-dimensional space. This position relative to another file's position reveals closest neighbors. Certain of the closest neighbors are grouped together to define a set. Overlapping members in the groups may be further differentiated from one another by partitioning. An optimized partition of set S of N overlapping groups yields a maximum strength for groups and members in that partition. Among other things, the optimized partition includes relative strengths of every individual member in every possible partition and weighting functions applied to the relative strengths and to subgroups of files within the partitions.

  • Patent number: 8612553
Abstract: A system and method for purposing a computing device is disclosed. The computing devices in a network are organized into groups referred to as Pods, each Pod of computing devices further comprising an aggregation node. The aggregation node monitors and controls the computing devices in the Pod. The aggregation node is used to copy a system image from the pristine partition of another computer device or from a library of system images to a target partition of the computer to be repurposed. Because the computing devices in the network are organized into Pods, with each Pod having an aggregation node, there is no single point of failure for the entire management and control of the network. The aggregation nodes for each Pod in the network can communicate with one another to most efficiently allocate resources among the various tasks to be performed by the computing resources in the network. Computing devices in the network can be repurposed and/or reassigned to different Pods based on the various criteria.

  • Patent number: 8364677
Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating partition keys in an information handling system having a partitioned database. Partition keys are generated by concatenating a partition subrange identifier specifying a subrange of key values and a sequence number specifying a particular key value within a subrange. Partition keys are assigned with the aid of a partition key control table that stores subrange and available key block information and is updated whenever key blocks are reserved or the database is repartitioned. An activity indicator maintained for each partition indicates recent activity in the partition. In response to a request for a partition key, a partition is selected for key assignment having the least recent activity as indicated by its activity indicator. Specific activity indicators disclosed include a timestamp for each partition in the control table, as well as a count of the threads in a particular application instance concurrently accessing a partition.

  • Patent number: 8156107
Abstract: The present invention addresses the problem of partitioning database relations across a plurality of hosts in a shared-nothing cluster while minimizing communication costs. A new partitioning approach for database relations—join-partitioning—is introduced that focuses on relations and their dependencies to a priori partition the plurality of relations to the plurality of hosts such that each host can locally compute a large class of queries over its partitioned data in isolation at query time, independent of other hosts in the cluster. Such an approach thus overcomes the primary bottleneck, i.e., the network, in deploying database systems over shared-nothing clusters by allowing them to seamlessly scale linearly to tens of thousands of hosts and manage tens or hundreds of terabytes of data.

Abstract: Prediction-based compression engines are spoon-fed with sequentially efficiently compressible (SEC) streams of input data that make it possible for the compression engines to more efficiently compress or otherwise compact the incoming data than would be possible with streams of input data accepted on a TV-raster scan basis. Various techniques are disclosed for intentionally forming SEC input data streams. Among these are the tight packing of alike files or fragments into concatenation suitcases and the decomposition of files into substantially predictably consistent (SPC) fragments or segments that are routed to different suitcases according to their type. In a graphics-directed embodiment, image frames are partitioned into segment areas that are internally SPC and multidirectional walks (i.e., U-turning walks) are defined in the segment areas where these defined walks are traced during compression and also during decompression.
